Publisher's summary

One of the 20th century's most challenging novels of ideas, The Fountainhead champions the cause of individualism through the story of a gifted young architect who defies the tyranny of conventional public opinion. The struggle for personal integrity in a world that values conformity above creativity is powerfully illustrated through three characters: Howard Roarke, the genius who is resented because he creates purely for the delight of his own work and on no other terms; Gail Wynand, the newspaper mogul and self-made millionaire whose power was bought by sacrificing his ideals to the lowest common denominator of public taste; and Dominique Francon, the devastating beauty whose desperate search for meaning has been twisted, through despair, into a quest to destroy the single object of her desire: Howard Roarke. Dramatic, poetic, and demanding, The Fountainhead remains one of the towering books on the contemporary intellectual scene.

Critic reviews

"Ayn Rand is a writer of great power. She has a subtle and ingenious mind and the capacity of writing brilliantly, beautifully, bitterly." ( New York Times Book Review)

Well read.

This is a very well read book. I did have to increase the speed to 1.7, but it still sounded good and helped me keep pace in the book.

A very inspiring story

First of all, I am amazed that I listened to such along book in a short period of time. Secondly, it kept attention and was well read by Christopher Hurt. I cheered on loudly at certain parts and cursed out loud at others. I felt a connection with Howard Roark along with a few other characters from time to time. Beautiful novel.

Like new lenses for old glasses

What a masterpiece by Ayn Rand! Embarrassed that I had not read this book earlier in life. This book is so timely for 2022 - amazed it was written so long ago. Now I laugh every morning when I read "Apple News " headlines with my new knowledge of how we are slowly being manipulated to believe collectively and taught to walk to society's drumbeat.

An incredible story

There is no doubt as to where you are with this book. The descriptions, the emotions, the characters are flawless. The story is difficult because it isn't a societal norm. The unraveling of the story is exquisite.

The most uplifting book I’ve ever read

I come back to this book often for inspiration. This narration by Christopher Hurt is particularly good.
