Publisher's summary

Inspired by The Hobbit and begun in 1937, The Lord of the Rings is a trilogy that J.R.R. Tolkien created to provide "the necessary background of history for Elvish tongues". From these academic aspirations was born one of the most popular and imaginative works in English literature.

The Fellowship of the Ring, the first volume in the trilogy, tells of the fateful power of the One Ring. It begins a magnificent tale of adventure that will plunge the members of the Fellowship of the Ring into a perilous quest and set the stage for the ultimate clash between the powers of good and evil.

In this splendid, unabridged audio production of Tolkien's great work, all the inhabitants of a magical universe – hobbits, elves, and wizards – step colorfully into life. Rob Inglis' narration has been praised as a masterpiece of audio.

BEST UNABRIDGED READING

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes - this is an epic book with a great read by Rob Inglis.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Peter Jackson did it better.

Any additional comments?

Rob Inglis does a fantastic read of this Tolkien classic - great characterizations and high drama all the way through. The only weak spot would be the songs - the guy is not a singer LOL.

Great, except for the songs

One of my favorite books, I’ve read it many times. The narration is very good except for the songs. Rob’s voice is just off in nearly every one. Other than that five stars.

Tolkien is long-winded and Inglis is lacking...

Tolkien is long-winded and Inglis is lacking... That said, it is a GREAT story. The story carries it through. I noticed a couple times, I've zoned out and come back to it 2-5 mins later and the same character is still talking about the same thing... That's frustrating. However, I think it's mostly because Inglis is so slow... I speed it up to 1.25 or 1.15 if I'm tired and my brain is sluggish.

I would recommend Jim Dale - I would listen to anything he reads (of Harry Potter fame). He'd do this story SO much justice. If you can, PLEASE, do this Audible. I'll buy it twice!

A Well Expected Journey

Great book with plenty of surprise and adventure, even if it’s been told many a time.

A classic retelling of a great story

As a Lord of the Rings fan and an avid bookworm this audiobook and the following series are a great addition to any collection. The story is clean and well versed and clear to understand and comprehend. The pacing is what you would expect for a book of this size which is not too slow but fast enough to not have you get bored while listening. One thing I do enjoy is listening to the narrators take on what the voices of the characters should sound like. The use of the various voices keeps me engaged and helps to know who is speaking. That little addition adds a lot of character to an old classic tale and makes for an enjoyable listen

Rob Ingles is great!

While some may consider the Fellowship to be somewhat slow (and I think it is at times), Rob Ingles’ narration makes it very worthwhile. He truly does a admirable job with most of the character’s voices and his syncopation/rhythm is fantastic!

The books & movies complement each other

Rereading and relistening to the Lord of the Rings trilogy reveals how brilliant the screenplays for Peter Jackson's movies are. They have their imperfections, but are nonetheless extraordinary in how, for example, they combine dialogue from minor characters, give such dialogue to major characters, move dialogue from one part of the story to another where it can be more effective within the cinematic narrative, how they take seeds of character development which are only hinted at in the books and develop them into full-fledged characters that are still true to the characters in the novels. This audiobook presentation as most other people have noted is superb. The narrator has a sonorous, classical-sounding voice which perfectly suits the story and the nobility of the characters and the language.

Truly the best Story.

I'm a fan of the Films. I never thought to see my Favorite story come to life as It did on this Audiobook performance. I learned so much more from the book than that of the film. If you are a fan of the movie's. This is a must. You wont be sorry.
