Publisher's summary

Inspired by The Hobbit and begun in 1937, The Lord of the Rings is a trilogy that J.R.R. Tolkien created to provide "the necessary background of history for Elvish tongues". From these academic aspirations was born one of the most popular and imaginative works in English literature.

The Fellowship of the Ring, the first volume in the trilogy, tells of the fateful power of the One Ring. It begins a magnificent tale of adventure that will plunge the members of the Fellowship of the Ring into a perilous quest and set the stage for the ultimate clash between the powers of good and evil.

In this splendid, unabridged audio production of Tolkien's great work, all the inhabitants of a magical universe – hobbits, elves, and wizards – step colorfully into life. Rob Inglis' narration has been praised as a masterpiece of audio.

Bravo.....!!!!

Would you consider the audio edition of The Fellowship of the Ring to be better than the print version?

Yes indeed!

What does Rob Inglis bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Excellent narration of an extremely intricate book. The singing is quite good and must have been very difficult to perform for the various characters and there are many!

I still LOVE it!

If you could sum up The Fellowship of the Ring in three words, what would they be?

Perseverance, Loyalty and Honor

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Fellowship of the Ring?

When they met the guy in the forest. I cannot remember his name. I loved his songs.

What does Rob Inglis bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I like the way he reads. He fits the book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

oh, no! Sometimes there was so much going on that you needed the break just to figure it all out.

Any additional comments?

I enjoy reading and listening to The Fellowship of the Ring because there was so much that they could not fit into the movie (and the movie was GOOD!). Things that I found interesting. Some wacky little tidbits like, how many people were at Bilbo's birthday party? I may not remember it tomorrow, but I enjoyed it today.

A true journey.

A harrowing adventure showing that acts of bravery and kindness from even the smallest and most timid of creatures can change the world for the better. With an amazing voice actor and detailed story you will be led on a journey through a world you will come to love.

loved the movie, loved the book.

if you loved the movie, so much more happens in the book. Some words weren't familiar since it was written a long time ago, but overall I feel I understood everything that was going on.

Good Story, Competent Narration

As many other reviewers have said, this story is indeed a classic. Until now, I thought that the only way I could find a decent recording was through the famous BBC dramatization. The other day, I stumbled on this performance, and I am glad I did. Tolkien was indeed a master story teller. However, if you're new to these stories, you could feel overwhelmed. Like a traveler, you may need a guide to help you sort things out, and for an audio book, the narrator can play that role. Rob Inglis does exactly that with this recording. He is a highly competent narrator. I get the sense he really understands the material. He paces the narration so you don't feel like you have to hurry through the story. You can let the story wash over you. Highly recommended.

Disappointing narrator for a timeless tale

Would you consider the audio edition of The Fellowship of the Ring to be better than the print version?

No. The narrator ruined the story. He has made it very very hard to follow

What other book might you compare The Fellowship of the Ring to and why?

Harry Potter for its complexly woven plots, amazing character building.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Rob Inglis?

Jim Dale. Please.

Any additional comments?

I simply am not able finish this story in audio version. The narrator is horrible. He has made the characters appear lame, dull, uninspiring. At times I cannot tell by his voice if they are joking or are serious; and actually had to re-listen to make full sense of the scene!!! Most of the time they sound like they are complaining or are on the verge of crying. So disappointed. Perhaps after listening Harry potter's audio rendition by Jim Dale I think I am spoilt for good.I am not able to enjoy the story at all. Sigh. All I have been doing is going back and forth tying to make sense of the story!

A GOOD LISTEN ON A SLOW DAY

I was not as impressed with the narration of this story as have been others. It took something away from the story. I'm sure he is a great narrator, but missed the mark in this story. Overall it was a good beginning to a great trilogy.
