Publisher's summary

Inspired by The Hobbit and begun in 1937, The Lord of the Rings is a trilogy that J.R.R. Tolkien created to provide "the necessary background of history for Elvish tongues". From these academic aspirations was born one of the most popular and imaginative works in English literature.

The Fellowship of the Ring, the first volume in the trilogy, tells of the fateful power of the One Ring. It begins a magnificent tale of adventure that will plunge the members of the Fellowship of the Ring into a perilous quest and set the stage for the ultimate clash between the powers of good and evil.

In this splendid, unabridged audio production of Tolkien's great work, all the inhabitants of a magical universe – hobbits, elves, and wizards – step colorfully into life. Rob Inglis' narration has been praised as a masterpiece of audio.

Captivating!

This story is a hard one to pause, it is so interesting. I love the narration. Rob Inglis definitely has talent. It is not dramatized, but he has a talent for all the different voices, and keeping them straight, so that I forget that it is all read by one man. The folk songs are very melodious, which I'm sure they wouldn't be if I was reading it aloud myself.

Total immersive experience

Having read the books years ago, then seeing the movie adaptation, this recording out does even the best of the movie. Rob Inglis brings unfathomable talent to his portrayals of every character. Each voiced in a unique and consistent voice with great characterizations including singing all of the numerous Tolkien songs. Really an incredible experience to be shared . This is easily the finest performance of an audio book i have heard.

Amazing book. Great narrator

The book, it goes without saying, is amazing. The narrator does a good job of staying out of the way of the story; it is easy to not notice him, and that is good. One thing that the narration lacked was inflection and emotion, however. Most of the time this was fine, but it sometimes creates a mood which I think is divorced from that of the text.

Just one unabridged version, SAD

Bottom line: I did enjoy listening to this classic story. But - this is the only unabridged version of this series available? Sad! I found the narrator to be hard to understand at times with a heavy British accent, and it's hard enough not to lose track with so many strange names and places being tossed around all the time. Oh my gosh the singing, I am still cringing just to think about it days later. Awful, and a few of those songs were so long, I just had to grit my teeth and bear through it. Would have been MUCH better just to speak the words and not try to sing it - let the listener imagine the music. Ugh. I saw the movies a bazillion times and even though those movies cut and spliced and twisted the storylines to a large extent, to experience the dramatic and exciting way certain scenes were portrayed in the films and then to hear the flattened way that this narrator read the same scenes...it was disappointing. All in all I'm happy to have listened to this but then again it should have been done better. Maybe someday someone will.

Music

The story is beautifully written and the narrator is fantastic. This is less of an audiobook and more of a symphony.

It's the LOTR.

Need I say more? The narrator did a fantastic job. I highly recommend it. Will be getting the next two books.

Lots of walking, but a classic

It is The Lord of the rings and it is a classic. It is a little dry at first, but you catch on quick. Better than the movie. Well worth a listen. Narration was phenomenal.
