Publisher's summary

Inspired by The Hobbit and begun in 1937, The Lord of the Rings is a trilogy that J.R.R. Tolkien created to provide "the necessary background of history for Elvish tongues". From these academic aspirations was born one of the most popular and imaginative works in English literature.

The Fellowship of the Ring, the first volume in the trilogy, tells of the fateful power of the One Ring. It begins a magnificent tale of adventure that will plunge the members of the Fellowship of the Ring into a perilous quest and set the stage for the ultimate clash between the powers of good and evil.

In this splendid, unabridged audio production of Tolkien's great work, all the inhabitants of a magical universe – hobbits, elves, and wizards – step colorfully into life. Rob Inglis' narration has been praised as a masterpiece of audio.

Featured Article: Boromir—A Lord of the Rings Character Guide

Among the array of characters in The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, one of the most intriguing is Boromir. Son of Denethor and heir to the Steward of Gondor, Boromir is present in only a small part of the trilogy. He first appears at the Council of Elrond, and dies before the end of Book One, The Fellowship of the Ring. Yet even though he is the only major character to die so early in the series, he plays an important role.

Simply Wonderful

Having read this book countless times in the past, listening to it was marvelous. Mr. Inglis is fantastic, from his different voices, to singing the songs, to tackling Elvish. A masterful performance that brought new enjoyment to an old favorite.

Took me awhile

The Hobbit was the first book I ever read completely from start to finish when I was a child but I never read the books that came after. This book was worth the wait. Only thing that annoyed me was the singing. Elves singing, hobbit limericks, dwarves bellowing, men rhyming...threw off the story for me, but not enough for me to knock off a star.

Everything I expected

It was great to see more depth to the characters than what was represented in the cinema version. I found the poems, songs and such, to lack the flow the rest of the written story possessed. Perhaps it was the performance (which was enjoyable, except when he is singing or reciting the poetry) I thought many times it would be enjoyable to hear music beneath the words in those situations. Ah well, still a great listen.

The Audible Book By Which Others Are Measured

It’s almost trite, but the Lord Of The Rings and Hobbit are so well done, that every other Audible book is compared to them. A five star rating is just a given....and earned. The narration is so good, the story so profound, that the god awful singing is something you simply blank out of your memory. I’ve read these books four or five times and they never get old. Rob Inglis deserves a reward for the terrific job he did with these. This Audible version adds some new emphasis that makes the story seem brand new, while still fitting comfortably like your favorite shirt. Highest recommendation.

Great but doesn’t have the prologue

It doesn’t have the prologue in the beginning that have the small chapters that tell you about hobbits and pipe weed and stuff

Narration is top notch. The best narration on an audible book I’ve listened to. Highly recommend.

Probably my favorite reading of any book ever.

Probably my favorite reading of any book ever, and I mean that without hyperbole. Rob Inglis performs all four of the LotR stories in world class fashion.

One of my favorite stories

Outstanding reading by the narrator! It’s been decades since I read Lord of the Rings. I enjoyed it thoroughly.
