Publisher's summary

Inspired by The Hobbit and begun in 1937, The Lord of the Rings is a trilogy that J.R.R. Tolkien created to provide "the necessary background of history for Elvish tongues". From these academic aspirations was born one of the most popular and imaginative works in English literature.

The Fellowship of the Ring, the first volume in the trilogy, tells of the fateful power of the One Ring. It begins a magnificent tale of adventure that will plunge the members of the Fellowship of the Ring into a perilous quest and set the stage for the ultimate clash between the powers of good and evil.

In this splendid, unabridged audio production of Tolkien's great work, all the inhabitants of a magical universe – hobbits, elves, and wizards – step colorfully into life. Rob Inglis' narration has been praised as a masterpiece of audio.

Pippin is just a "tween" (between the ages of 20 and 33 for Hobbits) when he gets swept up in the greatest battle between good and evil that Middle-earth has seen in thousands of years. Faced with terror, danger, and impossible choices, Pippin matures over the course of The Lord of the Rings series. The young Hobbit who leaves the Shire because he loves his friends and wants to help them is not the Hobbit who returns, wiser and somber but still hopeful.

Rob Inglis Makes the Story

Rob Inglis is really the only one who can do this story justice. He sings, he speaks Elvish, and he embodies each character with depth and passion. If you are going to listen to this trilogy, pick this narrator. I've read the books many times, but his rendition makes the story feel new.

Great to Revisit!

I read these every few years but this is the perfect way to experience the story and brilliance of Tolkien while I'm working, without having to necessarily deal with the long worded-ness for the 10th time. It's also nice to hear the songs and correct pronunciation of his languages. Highly recommended!

Timeless Classic

Although the storyline is slow at times and fraught with danger and anxiety at others, there's a reason this book, this series, transcends the ages... It's impossible not to be drawn into J.R. Tolkien's world. The magic he describes becomes almost tangible and I believe his greatest gift is in his creation of characters-his ability to draw the reader into their emotions and desires in a way that brings them wholly to life, not just as individuals but by portraying their entire communities, histories, and then intertwining their existences in unexpected experiences through distant lands and unfamiliar peoples. The reader truly does justice to the characters and makes their personalities even brighter-all around this is a smashing success and worth every minute.

Great text, good performance

Very cool to hear unabridged text and really get what the author was going for in creating this world that is aligned to older narrative styles. However, when gritty baritone of the reader attempts to sing in an ethereal Elvish voice, it’s a little hard to take…!

good story BUT :

his thin, quaking, vibratto singing voice is absolutely HIDEOUS. have to fast forward every time.
