Publisher's summary

Inspired by The Hobbit and begun in 1937, The Lord of the Rings is a trilogy that J.R.R. Tolkien created to provide "the necessary background of history for Elvish tongues". From these academic aspirations was born one of the most popular and imaginative works in English literature.

The Fellowship of the Ring, the first volume in the trilogy, tells of the fateful power of the One Ring. It begins a magnificent tale of adventure that will plunge the members of the Fellowship of the Ring into a perilous quest and set the stage for the ultimate clash between the powers of good and evil.

In this splendid, unabridged audio production of Tolkien's great work, all the inhabitants of a magical universe – hobbits, elves, and wizards – step colorfully into life. Rob Inglis' narration has been praised as a masterpiece of audio.

Ever-trilling Classic

love revisiting this book that captured my imagination. Far more impacting in my older days as I consider the darkness on our doorstep and personal response. The narrator is great as he captures different characters and skillfully sings Tolkien's melodies. Audible offers a quick and effective way of getting this classic into my schedule. On to the next book in the series.

Classic Tale Worth It

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Excellent job done with a classic book. I can't wait to complete the Trilogy. Would definitely recommend it to those who don't have the time to be stationary and read.

Very good overall

Excellent story! Always a fan of Tolkien's work.

The voice actor they chose however left much to be desired. While excellent for the deep voices of some of the male characters, the female characters and elves were much less realistic. And finally, while I appreciate the attempt to incorporate the songs, I would have preferred a simple recitation instead of the average at best tune the reader chose to try and put to the lyrics.

Love!

I've always been in love with the epic tales of the Hobbits and the ring since childhood. Reading the books, watching the animated series as a child; watching BOTH trilogies and, now, listening to it read to me? All is right with the world. Inglis, though I don't know much about him, did a fine job, as well as can be expected when tasked with reading such an epic tale. My only complaint, if it can be called that, is that I could hear him confusing the voices of the characters at times. Even so, he is an orator if ever I've heard one and enjoyed him.

Awesome Performance and Dulls the Labor

I have always enjoyed the world of Middle Earth. When I first read The Hobbit at 12 I fell in love with the tale. I struggled through this book at 15 however and thought I didn't enjoy reading. When reading was rekindled in me, I eventually returned to the books but couldn't get through The Return of the King. It was then I realized Tolkien was a little too good at his craft. While he could ensure your senses with suspense, he can get much too long winded about creating the setting and atmosphere. Mr. Inglis' passion for Tolkien's works of art shows through. He is a phenomenal narrator and throws all his creativity into the voices and even singing the songs. I'm so pleased and happy I discovered these treasures on Audible. This is ideal storytelling and you will not be disappointed.

Easy on the ears, enthralling for the mind

As 22 year old, I am a fan of LOTR, but I was uncertain I’d take to this reading despite my current reading background. I worried it might overly wordy or full of jargon of its age. Fortunately, I was wrong. It went by too quickly and was delightful to listen to. The narrator sings the songs! I would otherwise have skipped them, I dislike reading songs. The text flows well and is not too heavy in any place I can think. If you are worried it will be too much to listen to or follow, I think you will find this one is doable.

Book

The book is great and so is the reader built one thing, which carries through all of the Lotr books is the singing. It just puts off the whole adventuring feeling
