Publisher's summary

Inspired by The Hobbit and begun in 1937, The Lord of the Rings is a trilogy that J.R.R. Tolkien created to provide "the necessary background of history for Elvish tongues". From these academic aspirations was born one of the most popular and imaginative works in English literature.

The Fellowship of the Ring, the first volume in the trilogy, tells of the fateful power of the One Ring. It begins a magnificent tale of adventure that will plunge the members of the Fellowship of the Ring into a perilous quest and set the stage for the ultimate clash between the powers of good and evil.

In this splendid, unabridged audio production of Tolkien's great work, all the inhabitants of a magical universe – hobbits, elves, and wizards – step colorfully into life. Rob Inglis' narration has been praised as a masterpiece of audio.

The full truth of it.

Not a huge history buff, in fact it gets rather tiresome at times, but knowing how good this story was in its film adaptation, I knew I had to press on to hear the true telling of the Lord of the Rings. Worth the effort.

More

Rob Inglis turns in another solid read of J.R.R. Tolkien. It's more difficult to differentiate characters than in The Hobbit — nearly all of the characters use one of two voices except Gimli. The story is much improved from The Hobbit. It still takes quite a long time to get to the purpose of the One Ring and the actual story, Fellowship, quest, etc. As with the Hobbit, the songs/poems do not translate well to the audio version of the book. I get it: Tolkien loved poetry and wasn't half bad at writing it. Reading Fellowship and the other Rings books, the poems/songs add a little flavor to the mythos and world of Middle Earth, but in the course of the story they are incredibly distracting.

Always Good

Loved it. Read it many times. . .yet it sounds a tad bit more authentic when read by the Brits.

Soooo... much better than the movies.

Tolkien was a linguist, and Rob Ingles does it a pretty good justice. Ingles version won the Hugo award for best dramatic work.

An Excellent Epic

I would highly recommend this book to others. It is the first in a trilogy that follows the predecessor, The Hobbit. It tells a take of a magic ring that is teetering in the balance of good and evil. You'll find lore, myth, legend, and fantasy within this masterpiece. You'll meet wizards, Dwarves, Elves, Rangers, Hobbits, & so many more fascinating characters.
The LOTR (TFOTR) is an excellent epic narrated by Rob Inglis with such great effort and skill that you hear different characters, different voices, songs, and roots of character choices adopted into the film series that followed.

This tale is exquisitely detailed and enthralling. The character development is natural and appealing. The structure is well laid.

Wonderful

Narrator does a great job. The story is, of course, one of the best written in this age.

One of the Greatest Stories of All Time

Tolkien was a genius. The Lord of the Rings, in my opinion, is the greatest fantasy world ever created. As far as I'm concerned, all other fantasy books with dwarves, elves, goblins, etc. are just knock off copies of this incredible masterpiece. I'm actually quite upset that I wasn't required to read this in school. Just buy it already.

The Fellowship . . .

I have read the books, have the DVD’s and now in the vaccine era of the pandemic I am experiencing the Audible version of TLOR. It is a wonderful experience that I recommend.
