Publisher's summary

Inspired by The Hobbit and begun in 1937, The Lord of the Rings is a trilogy that J.R.R. Tolkien created to provide "the necessary background of history for Elvish tongues". From these academic aspirations was born one of the most popular and imaginative works in English literature.

The Fellowship of the Ring, the first volume in the trilogy, tells of the fateful power of the One Ring. It begins a magnificent tale of adventure that will plunge the members of the Fellowship of the Ring into a perilous quest and set the stage for the ultimate clash between the powers of good and evil.

In this splendid, unabridged audio production of Tolkien's great work, all the inhabitants of a magical universe – hobbits, elves, and wizards – step colorfully into life. Rob Inglis' narration has been praised as a masterpiece of audio.

Engaging plot

Loved listening to this engaging plot with numerous, interesting characters. Great for long car rides across the United States. Looking forward to second book in the trilogy!

Amazing Narration

This tale was best told with a British accent. Something comical (in a good way) to my American ears hearing a traditional sounding Brit riffing elfin ballads between rather sober narrative.

HANDS DOWN THE BEST BOOK SERIES EVER WRITTEN !!!

It's absolutely amazing that Tolkien was able to write his massive and beautifully detailed universe in a shorter time frame than George RR Martin's work on a world of ice and fire. Not only has Tolkien come out with tons more information, that has still yet been seen in its entirety to this day, but he did all of that while fighting a world war and the countless other things this man has accomplished in his amazing lifespan. Yet 27 years and counting, George RR Martin has still not even come close to completing his main series, a song of ice and fire. I'm not trying to discredit George RR Martin's work because his series is also up there as one of the best ever but I am simply stating that this only shows the pure genius of Tolkien and his masterpieces of Middle earth. I have read all of his books and listened to them all several times as well and he is truly one of the greatest story tellers of all time. The ability to create such a complex and detailed history of a universe he created is truly remarkable and can never be topped. Without this mans pure creative genius we would not have the many other beloved epic fantasy series we have today. So please read these stories if you really want to dive deep into another world where you will be able to not only escape your world for as long as you want but to also be transformed by the endless philosophical teachings that lies amoung the timeless pages of his work. This journey will constantly teach you new lessons that you can carry with you throughout your life and use on a daily basis. Each time I reread or listen to his words I always walk away learning something new and realizing the endless depth of his work never stops pushing your imagination further then before. I am truly so happy and always so grateful for the time I've spent in middle earth. Thank you for all the amazing work.

A perfect companion

I had been craving a beautifully written story to keep me company and entertain my imagination, and this was the perfect answer! I loved every single moment. Listening to this book the past week or two has enriched my life immensely! The writing is so beautiful, and the narrator did an outstanding job reading it to us; I loved his singing voice too. I’m sure I will return to this book again and again. Now on to The Two Towers! 😊💕

Marvelous

The Budweiser, the McDonald’s, and the PlayStation 2 of all fantasy stories. The king of all fantasy, The Lord of the Rings shines brightest amongst them all. No other tale had gripped me like these stories. The Fellowship, the beginning of the tale, feels that it maybe the most whimsical of the three. From the Shire to the east bank of Mordor, the journey is only greater and more intense as the book goes on. Simply Marvelous.

This is excellent but...

Please have Steven Red Fox Garnett narrate an edition of Lord of the Rings (and more). I would buy it. Thank you.
