Publisher's summary

Inspired by The Hobbit and begun in 1937, The Lord of the Rings is a trilogy that J.R.R. Tolkien created to provide "the necessary background of history for Elvish tongues". From these academic aspirations was born one of the most popular and imaginative works in English literature.

The Fellowship of the Ring, the first volume in the trilogy, tells of the fateful power of the One Ring. It begins a magnificent tale of adventure that will plunge the members of the Fellowship of the Ring into a perilous quest and set the stage for the ultimate clash between the powers of good and evil.

In this splendid, unabridged audio production of Tolkien's great work, all the inhabitants of a magical universe – hobbits, elves, and wizards – step colorfully into life. Rob Inglis' narration has been praised as a masterpiece of audio.

Props to narrator

Rob Inglis does an excellent job in narrating and even singing Acapella-style! Although the story was more in-depth, the film was so much more stirring and intimite. The Ring Wraiths of the movie were quite a bit more menacing than the Dark Riders of the book. Most of the plot and dialogue are centered on movement rather than action and description.

It is a total master piece. One word, delightful..

Loved it. It was a magnificent experience to have listened to Rob put personality and voices to the story written by Tolkien. I recommend it, undoubtedly.

Rob Inglis does a masterful job

Of course, this is not a new story by any means. The book is a work of art, but the narration adds something very special. Truly an enjoyable listen.

Suckerpunch

The singing was so over the top and hilarious, and long, so very long. That said, I loved this entire series and will happily listen again later. Moving

Total empathetic submersion into such deep and rich characters is amazing. I feel enriched.

Excellent Voice Acting, Classic Story

Everyone knows lord of the rings is awesome, but this voice actor knocks it out of the park. Many voices, different languages, singing, poetry, emotion... it’s a challenging book. This guy does an awesome job. Bravo.

Really wowed by the performance!

Amazing narrator, but you gotta give credit to the Author for his way with description.

it's amazing how modern this story feels.

I had been told by more than a few people over the years how good these books were, and how hard they could be to get through. I found both to be correct to a certain degree.

I really was struck by how modern this story feels. Before reading this, I was big fan of the film adaptation of the trilogy and was amazed at how much was directly taken from this book. Many little things were changed as well of course. What stuck out to me the list is how alive the world feels and how much personality the characters have.

My biggest criticism would be that there isn't much urgency with the plot. Up until about 3/4 of the book, the story can feel a bit meandering. This does lead to a lot of exposition about the history of Middle earth and those that inhabit it. I personally liked this a lot, but it does come at the expense of pacing at times.

I'm very glad I took the dove with this story. It felt a bit intimidating, but was much more welcoming than I thought it would be. it was quite relaxing at time, if I'm being honest. I'm looking forward to completing the trilogy in the not to distant future.

A wonderful fantasy adventure

The narrator did a great job at providing the experience one would have while reading the Lord of the Rings. I can’t wait to grab book two, and I will definitely be re-listening to this book in the future.

reader kinda boring

editing could have been better. wasn't a fan of hearing the old man's every breath, which often had a fair bit of saliva involved. almost all of his character choices sounded the same and there was little to no change his voice for critical moments.
