Publisher's summary

Inspired by The Hobbit and begun in 1937, The Lord of the Rings is a trilogy that J.R.R. Tolkien created to provide "the necessary background of history for Elvish tongues". From these academic aspirations was born one of the most popular and imaginative works in English literature.

The Fellowship of the Ring, the first volume in the trilogy, tells of the fateful power of the One Ring. It begins a magnificent tale of adventure that will plunge the members of the Fellowship of the Ring into a perilous quest and set the stage for the ultimate clash between the powers of good and evil.

In this splendid, unabridged audio production of Tolkien's great work, all the inhabitants of a magical universe – hobbits, elves, and wizards – step colorfully into life. Rob Inglis' narration has been praised as a masterpiece of audio.

Featured Article: Elrond—A Lord of the Rings Character Guide

If you love J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, then you know that all of the events of the story would be impossible without the half-Elf Elrond. Elrond, the Lord of Rivendell, lived in Middle-earth from the First Age to the beginning of the Fourth Age. It was with the help of Elrond that the evil Sauron was defeated and alliances were forged. Elrond is one of the most prominent characters throughout Tolkien's stories. But who is he and what is his story?

Highly recommended.

I am a huge fan of the Lord of the Rings and I have read them all, beginning with the hobbit, then starting the LOTR trilogy when my parents got me a 3 in one copy right before the movies came out. I saw the movie fellowship of the ring before I finished the book but went on to read both the two towers, and return of the king, before they were released. Long has it been since I’ve read the Fellowship of the ring but having just listened to it once again through this recording all the images have come back to my mind from when I first read through as a young person. This is a delightfully wonderful recording of the Fellowship, and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

The Lord of the Rings

I cannot imagine a better recording of both the Hobbit and The Lord if the Rings. I have read these books countless times. I realized years ago that the draw for me is the beauty of the language (as well, of course, as the tale itself). The songs, the poetry, the beauty of the language have come alive for me in ways I could never have imagined by the narration of Rob Inglis. Not only will continue with the remainder of the trilogy, I will listen to these again and again and again and...!

Excellent book, excellent narration

What can I say about the book that hasn't already been said? Not much. I love it, and this rendition does it justice, and then some.

My only issue was that sometimes Aragorn and Boromir's voices were indistinguishable from Gandalf's. But overall it was still plenty easy to follow and the narration was excellent. On to the Two Towers!

A wonderful revisit to middle earth.

I was in foster care during my senior year of high school when I first read the Lord of the rings.

I hadn’t had any plans to revisit middle earth until my 10-year-old son came home from school a few months ago. He handed me a huge book containing all three books of the trilogy, telling me that he checked it out from his teachers personal library for me because he knew how much I loved it.

I’m blind, with a very limited vision. It seems that I just don’t have the time to sit down and read books using electronica magnification devices like I used to. So I came here, to audible.

Veneration of this book was wonderful! It kept my attention. I even enjoyed the fact that the narrator would sing the songs that are scattered throughout the book. I would highly recommend this to anyone who loves these kinds of books.

Great piece of work and the narrator is highly skilled.

I loved it. It was a beautifully written story and the narrator did the work justice. You should give it a listen.

Wonderful!

Wonderful book... I have read the series many times over the years. Watching the movies was great but they left so much out and changed quite a bit. Looking forward to volume 2!

Voices in background

Great story but I can hear a woman talking in the background in the chapter where strider tells the hobbits that he is Aragorn
