Poet Laureate Bjornstjerne Bjornson is one of the great Norwegian writers, on par with the likes of Henrik Ibsen. In this very short piece, Bjornson paints the unhappy story of Thor, a father whose son drowns in the lake. Walter Zimmerman gives a tremendous performance. He embodies Thor's deep and slow voice as well as the priest's peaceful and contemplative one. With suspenseful pacing, Zimmerman highlights the work's grim, though redemptive, tone. At just eight minutes, "The Father" is a haunting fable that won't soon leave the listener.
