Publisher's summary

On the eve of his marriage to the beautiful Mercedes, having that very day been made captain of his ship, the young sailor Edmond Dantès is arrested on a charge of treason, trumped up by jealous rivals. Incarcerated for many lonely years in the isolated and terrifying Chateau d'If near Marseille, he meticulously plans his brilliant escape and extraordinary revenge.

Of all the "masked avengers" and "caped crusaders" in literature, The Count of Monte Cristo is at once the most daring and the most vulnerable. Alexandre Dumas (père), master storyteller, takes us on a journey of adventure, romance, intrigue, and ultimately, redemption.

Breathtaking story and remarkable narration

Each character is so full of life and depth. The description laid out for all characters fleshes out even the most minor of characters really painting a picture of the world presented.

Almost impossible to halt the playing of the story

Narration was excellent. I could have easily mistaken that the story was read by a many individuals as the number of characters in the book. Absolutely well done.

Long and wonderful read

Would you listen to The Count of Monte Cristo again? Why?

Absolutely. The book is very long (comparatively speaking of course) and was very much enjoyable.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Count of Monte Cristo?

When the Count returns to d'If was chilling, may have been my favorite part.

What about Bill Homewood’s performance did you like?

Not speaking french and not being very good at any pronunciation in any language, I very much enjoyed Mr. Homewoods.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Heavens no. 52 hours is a bit long for one sitting.

Any additional comments?

I found Mr. Homewoods reading a little slow for my taste and listened to the book at 1.25x speed.

classic for a reason

the story is great and the performance was great. I can't speak for the other versions, but I'd pick this one again. Bill Homewood did an excellent job and really brought the characters to life for me.

loved the epic story

I loved this version. Being French I'm always curious to hear translations of classic books. I loved the narration. My only complaint would be : when you are in your car you will Cleary hear the dry mouth of the narrator . once you re self conscious about this, it's hard to forget it.

A joy! Could not put it down....

What did you love best about The Count of Monte Cristo?

The well done storyline. The age old good-versus evil with redemption was well portrayed. It took me a small amount of time to get straight all of the characters as they were introduced but all that required was paying close attention as it was being narrated. It is definitely one that you have to listen to whole heartedly to get the most out of it.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Count of Monte Cristo?

Each of the moments in which he exacted his "unveiling" were memorable, whether to the blessed or the cursed!

What does Bill Homewood bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Mr. Homewood brings individuality to each character of the book. He gave everyone of them more character than I could have imagined by just reading the story. I also don't have enough time to give this lengthy of a book the undivided attention it deserved by reading it.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The devotion the Count was able to still impart after all of his adversity moved me throughout the whole story! I cannot pin it down to just one moment.

Any additional comments?

When I chose this book it was so different from anything I had read previously. I was truly surprised when I got "hooked" right away and COULD NOT put it down. It had opened up a whole new genre of titles to my interest!

Revenge wrapped in 19th Century Paris!

Read this back in High School and did not get the full effect of the story! The performance on the audio book is outstanding!

Recommend for those seeking an escape from the 21st century!

So much better than I remembered!

I remember reading the abridged version of The Count of Monte Cristo when I was in high school and back then I liked the book but since some important scenes where missing from the abridged version, I could not fully enjoy all that this book offers. However, now having listened to this book in its entirety, I can say that it is so much better than I remembered from high school.

I love revenge plots in the first place and the precision that The Count executes with each of his revenges is one of the reasons why this book is a classic. The sarcastic humor is another and there are certainly plenty more.

The narrator of the book was wonderful! I loved how Homewood was able to pronounce the European names of places and people correctly, especially the French ones. Each character had a distinct voice and it brought this old tale to life. I really enjoyed all 52 hours and 45 minutes of The Count of Monte Cristo.
