Publisher's summary

On the eve of his marriage to the beautiful Mercedes, having that very day been made captain of his ship, the young sailor Edmond Dantès is arrested on a charge of treason, trumped up by jealous rivals. Incarcerated for many lonely years in the isolated and terrifying Chateau d'If near Marseille, he meticulously plans his brilliant escape and extraordinary revenge.

Of all the "masked avengers" and "caped crusaders" in literature, The Count of Monte Cristo is at once the most daring and the most vulnerable. Alexandre Dumas (père), master storyteller, takes us on a journey of adventure, romance, intrigue, and ultimately, redemption.

enjoyed

I enjoyed listening to this story very much. I have seen the movie and I really can not compare the two. Mr Homewood performance was wonderful, most of the time I would forget it was only one person speaking the personalities were done so well. I am very glad I selected this book and hope to listen to more of the wonderful classics

soooooo long, but highly engaging

This is probably the most engaging thriller/romance/adventure story of the past 200 years. A bit too long, often lost in side stories written for feuilleton readers rather than for continuous readers.
My favourite of the all, no doubt.

The narrator is strong on French names, but almost always wrong in pronouncing Italian names. There's also a fake Italian accent on Italian characters, while French or British ones remain represented with a perfect British accent. Perhaps it is because of the love-hate story between France and England, go figure!

One of my favorite stories. But...

The performer was very good at telling the story. However it was very hard to get past the amount of smacking from the performer. He needed to have some water.

Absolutely one of the best stories I've ever heard

Amazing story, very well written, narration was fine but definitely could have been of a better quality

FREAKING AMAZING.

Good luck trying to turn it off. As most people I had only seen the 90's movie which was very good, but this... this has truly lived up to the title of classic. the translation was great.

Excellent Story, but beware of narrator

The Count of Monte Cristo is one of my all time favorite books, so much so that I re-read it at least once every 1-2 years. This year I thought I might try listening instead of carting around the massive tome for a couple weeks. Bought this version based on the superb narrator reviews, but I should have paid slightly more attention: If you are bothered or grossed out by mouth noises, lips and tongues squishing, or the sound of saliva rattling DO NOT listen to this version. Went back to reviews to see that there are enough people who had a similar problem with Homewood's excessive mouth noises (in nearly every sentence) that I wasn’t alone in being disgusted/put on edge while listening. Do listen to/read the Count of Monte Cristo. It is an excellent novel. But perhaps find a different narrator.

A testament to literature

I loved every chapter and the book rarely slows down. You're dropped into this world and experience it all with incredible detail and prose. one of the best books and the best narrator you could ask for.
