Publisher's summary

The Count of Monte Cristo is an adventure novel by Alexandre Dumas.

Published in 1844, it is often considered one of the great thrillers of all time and, along with The Three Musketeers, Dumas' most popular work.

Falsely accused of treason, the young sailor Edmund Dantes is arrested on his wedding day and imprisoned in the island fortress of the Chateau d'If. After staging a dramatic escape, he sets out to discover the treasure of Monte Cristo and catch up with his enemies.

Alexandre Dumas (1802 - 1870) was a French writer, best known for his numerous historical novels of high adventure, which have made him one of the most widely read French authors in the world.

Loved it!!!

This was first time listening to this classic. I saw the movie version and I thought I knew it all. The book is 100 times better. I will admit I missed a lot the first time I listened ( I listen at work and in the car) So to get a better handle on all the many characters, I went to wikapedia. I read the short version and I listened a second time. Loved it more. It has it all love, deceit, good wins over evil and a handsome rich guy!

Timeless classic

I borrowed an unabridged version of this from the local library many years ago and wanted to own a copy for myself. This wasn't the same narrator, but I liked this one so much better. The pronunciations of the foreign words sounded authentic, even with the narrator occasionally correcting himself. If I closed my eyes I could imagine myself as a child having my grandfather reading to me at bedtime. The story is the original 'revenge is a dish best served cold' example. Dumas is a favorite of mine, his attention to detail borders on obsessive, but adds so much to the story line that no fault can be found. All in all, this is an outstanding value for the money!

50.47 hours of great Listening

I just listened to the book for the second time in the past year. The second time through I picked up on more of the old English that I missed before. The narrator is great and its a low budget production since one can hear the pages being turned in the background. Regardless I strongly recommend it.

Greatest secular literary work every written

I have listened to this book 8 times. That's over 400 hours of listening. I love this book. The plot and characters are so complex that I am never bored when I listen again. I listen every other year and I love it. Apart from the Book of Mormon, this is the book that I have heard the most in my life.

amazing performance

This is hands down my favorite performance of this story. The narrator even at times when he makes mistakes it's still captivating. His ability to fully immerse you into this story simply amazing.

praise

The unabridged version is probably the best novel in all of literature. Robert Louis Stevenson called it "A perfect piece of story telling", enough said.

Great book

The narration stumbles a bit every now and then and you can occasionally hear the page turning. Still the narrator does an excellent job especially considering the length of the book. I'd give the narration a 4.5 if that were available.

The best story, I loved it!

A fantastic story. Kept me at full attention through the whole 50+ hours. I was sad for it to end, I could have kept listening and listening. I didn't care one bit that the narrator sometimes stuttered on words or paused a bit long and yes, even could hear pages turning. Who cares? For what I spent on this recording, I was 100% satisfied. If you want a well known narrator, then go pay more and you will get it. But I will recommend this version to my friends. Thank you Audible, for letting us decide what is more important to us in an audible book.
