An outstanding reading of the story

The true story of the Count of Monte Cristo is of course outstanding as opposed to the fairly recent movie. The real story is longer and much more exciting and adventurous. The narrator, John Lee does a remarkable job with the many characters in the story. I was glued to the reading and kept finding excuses to continue. I thoroughly enjoyed this version!

I can’t believe I am only reading this now at 60 years old. Fun, twists, turns, intrigue, love, and a fable.

Great classic but wordy

Of course, it is written in the style of that time period where all great works and authors use 50 words to express 2 words in our modern English tongue. In that way the story line is laboriously long. However, with that being said, the story is wonderful. The reason to live through adversity and hope of light at the other end is a fitting end of the theme. The narration is excellent and over all a fine classic tale.

More than just an action-adventure story

Having never read this book before, I had an idea that it was just some Errol Flynn movie with capes and swords, but in print. I couldn't have been more wrong. Along with period romance and period adventure and period action, there are deep lessons in revenge, forgiveness, love, mercy, politics, religion, class warfare, mortality, destiny, foreign policy, criminal justice, and even bubble economics. I cried at several points and especially at the heart-throbbing and poetic end. The narration is superb and appropriately dignified for the flowery and formal language of the times.

old tale well told

Rollicking adventure, colorful, detailed, old-fashioned writing, long but elegant, lots of interesting characters. The reader's pace is just right, clarity and expression are very good; pronunciation of the French not great ("du" sounds like "doo"). Great choice for snowstorm or long dreary sick day.

If you think you know this book ... you don't!

John Lee, WOW, makes every character come alive. How does he do it? Alexander Dumas would also say "Wow!". I thought I knew this story, but I was so wrong. Get ready for the ride of your life into a time and culture you will never forget. Thank you Audible for giving us a luxury that is priceless.

Fabulous

I forgot HOW DIFFERENT the book is from the movie. I read the book 20 years ago, but saw the movie a couple months back which prompted me to buy it here.... The book was fantastic. What a great and convoluted story. If I could give it more stars, I would. The length was criticized by some reviewers, but every word created a picture and I wouldn't want to eliminate one of them.
