Oh My Dog! I loved it!

What made the experience of listening to The Count of Monte Cristo the most enjoyable?

The story is so rich with descriptions and sub-plots and stories about the people that make up the story. I was amazed that anyone could keep it all connected without a word processor and a NORAD tracking team.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The Count, because he was playing five different roles in the story, each one subtly different but all interconnected.

What about John Lee’s performance did you like?

He brought life to the story with hi portrayal of each character as a different being. He is a great narrator.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but OMD! 45 hours in one sitting is a bit much. It took me a week of delivering crude oil to finnish the story and I wanted more.

Any additional comments?

I love Alexandre Dumas works. He brought live to his characters like so few can. I expected to encounter Sinbad the Sailor or the Count himself at times as if they were real people. I can't get enough of his stories and I reread them at least once a year.

Alas, it had to end...

I was dreading the end of that book. Not because of the end itself. But because it HAD to end, and after 47 hours of my life spent with Edmond Dantès, Count of Monte Cristo, I just couldn't leave him. Edmond Dantès is one of the monuments of French lit., a kind of Batman (seriously), a sublimely well educated avenging angel who can charm while talking of art or poisons. John Lee's narration is flawless--I will not hold against him the mangled French words.. that is a common flaw of all audiobooks I have read so far, and unless you are French as I am, it won't spoil your pleasure--and his deep warm voice perfectly portraits the superhuman nature of the awe inspiring Count. I also wish to add that the English translation matches in elegance Dumas's French. Very highly recommended for a true dark, romantic ride.

Wow, what a ride!

What did you love best about The Count of Monte Cristo?

I enjoyed the book through its entirety. It was a visual, emotional, sensory experience throughout.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The Count of course. I enjoyed the way he reinvented himself.

What does John Lee bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He was a wonderful narrator whose rich voice was able to emulate both male and female characters in a way that made them believable. I enjoyed the fact that he reserved one voice in particular for the count himself.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The moment that he recognized that he was going to be locked up for a very long time. In that moment he had to give up Mercedes and the life he had dreamed of.

Any additional comments?

I was moved by the story and the ability of the author to really bring about very deep and real characters. We could feel the count's cold hands, we could see Dunglar for the kind of man he was. Very good listen.

My First Classic

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely. The story was intriguing and the narrator was really great.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The Count went in and out of favor with me, at times charming and benevolent, at others cruel and sinister. A very complicated man.

Any additional comments?

I am normally a listener of Science Fiction and Horror. I was inspired by the reviews of this book and, I'll admit it, my love of the latest movie. This book had me excited for my daily, hour-long commute and inspired walks in the hot summer to get in some more time.

What other book might you compare The Count of Monte Cristo to and why?

Worth Every Minute

It is hard to imagine that an audio book that runs over 41 hours long could keep your attention the entire way; but, make no mistake, this audio book, as written and narrated so well, is more than worth the sum of so many others!
