Publisher's summary

Arthur Conan Doyle never wasted time in getting his stories moving. His plots are always direct and refreshingly lucid, and the narrative has a velocity that sweeps you along right to the end. This was no doubt a large part of his immense worldwide success. Not surprisingly, each time he tried to end the series, his fans would howl in protest. But, as he says in the preface to his last collection of Sherlock Holmes stories, all good things must come to an end. And so it is with this series, as we have now arrived at the end of the Sherlock Holmes tales, Conan Doyle's most magnificent creation.

This last volume contains one novel, The Valley of Fear, and two collections of short stories: His Last Bow and The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes.

Thoughts on Sherlock Holmes

What did you love best about The Complete Stories of Sherlock Holmes, Volume 3?

Sweet short stories that have great variety that I can listen to several times and not get board.

What did you like best about this story?

All the stories in this volume were so different than the ones the other 2 volumes

What does Charlton Griffin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The outstanding change and character that he brings in to all the voices and accents! Just amazing!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, it is a great book but it is broken in to short stories so it is really nice to listen to when you dont have a lot of time to focus on one book.

Excellent Stories, shame about the reader

Would you listen to The Complete Stories of Sherlock Holmes, Volume 3 again? Why?

The stories, as those who know anything about Conan Doyle, are excellent. Far better than the TV series - they give Holmes a more sympathetic character and therefore a more human one. I can listen to these again and again and shall do so!

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator was disappointing. At times his pronunciation of words is, to say the least, peculiar. It is as though he is not used to how English should be pronounced and is trying to speak the Queen's English and getting it wrong. In addition, he does not do justice to some of the characters, particularly those of females. It is a shame and disappointing.

SH is timelesss!

What did you love best about The Complete Stories of Sherlock Holmes, Volume 3?

The performance of the pure literature of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and not an adaptation.

What did you like best about this story?

Story accuracy and attention to the original words used by the author.

Which character – as performed by Charlton Griffin – was your favorite?

No real selection!

If you could take any character from The Complete Stories of Sherlock Holmes, Volume 3 out to dinner, who would it be and why?

I am not sure if I would like to really meet Sherlock Holmes! He is a very arogant individual, but genuinely smart people ar e, generally, arrogany.

Valley of Fear, Gold among Gold

I just finished the Valley of Fear, and my God, what a story. I cannot explain how it sucked me in and spit me back out in a heap of awe. If you read only one of Doyle's stories, let it be this one. I paused the audiobook just to write this review. I am enamored with the stories of Sherlock Holmes— I have read a few in print, and listened to the first two volumes of these audiobooks, and this narrator does such an excellent performance that I will surely listen to him tell these stories again. Just awesome.

Make room in your brain attic for this one!

If you could sum up The Complete Stories of Sherlock Holmes, Volume 3 in three words, what would they be?

Classic mystery fun

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The plots definitely keep you engaged as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle plays up the romanticized thrills that would have kept "The Strand" readers pining for more each week. While the thrills will bring you in, I find that following the relationship of Sherlock and Watson will hold your engagement more resolutely,

What about Charlton Griffin’s performance did you like?

Charlton Griffin really gets into each character, and his performance rarely sounds strained or tired.

Great--except for the whiny women

What did you love best about The Complete Stories of Sherlock Holmes, Volume 3?

First, I love Sherlock. I have ever since an English teacher in my youth introduced me to _Hound of the Baskervilles_. As other have said, some of these stories aren't his very best, but I still love them because they are about Holmes.

Any additional comments?

My biggest complaint about this particular audio edition is that the narrator tends to do most of the women the same, and they often come off as very whiny. When a woman has a long chunk of the narrative, it gets very tiring.

Great recording, but....

I find it strange that they have much older people than the characters reading some parts, especially the women's voices. I think they have one woman who voices all of the female parts, and I can tell by listening to her that she has to be at least in her 60's - and many of the characters in the stories are in their 20's or 30's. Sounds a bit strange and gets tiresome after a while. Otherwise they're great recordings and I recommend them.
