Publisher's summary

Volume two in this series consists of one novel, The Hound of the Baskervilles, and two collections of short stories, which include "Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes" and "The Return of Sherlock Holmes" (a total of 23 stories). These creations by Doyle represent the finest work of his Holmes series, and certainly the most famous. They are reproduced here (and in all volumes) in the order in which they were first published.

First appearing in print in 1890, the character of Sherlock Holmes has now become synonymous worldwide with the concept of a super sleuth. His creator, Conan Doyle, imbued his detective hero with intellectual power, acute observational abilities, a penchant for deductive reasoning and a highly educated use of forensic skills. Indeed, Doyle created the first fictional private detective who used what we now recognize as modern scientific investigative techniques. Doyle ended up writing four novels and 56 short stories featuring Holmes and his companion, Dr. Watson. All but four are told in the first person by Watson, two by Holmes, and two are written in the third person. Together, this series of beautifully written Victorian literature has sold more copies than any other books in the English language, with the exceptions of the Bible and Shakespeare.

Holmes at his best

The Hound of the Baskervilles might be my favorite Holmes story. I am a surprised fan. I definitely had a misconception of mystery novels. So even if you're not normally a fan of the mystery genre I strongly suggest a foray into Holmes.

Who doesn't love Sherlock?

Loved listening to all these who done it tales again. A relaxing and intriguing series of stories that still held my' interest 100 years after it was written. It is also interesting to hear how they lived in the time before telephones, cars and the internet.

Shockingly Modern

I’ve been sampling the “classics” more for a few years. I have mixed feelings about the classics, as a group. Both time and the “wisdom of the crowd” are a powerful filter, but sometimes the gap in world views is a problem. For example Aristotle’s word view was just too un-modern for me glean much from his writings. In contrast Plato requires only a modest ability to explore less modern paradigm and many of his gyms are trivially transported to a modern context.

Sherlock Holms felt like it was written today and merely set in the past. It was truly amazing. The only tell was slight aversion to gore (which I rather think is not such a bad thing).

It is targeted at the young reader, but very inter-generational. It’s the perfect book to read to your children or grandchildren.

Fantastic!

The narration, the stories, what more could I ask for. My only regret is not giving it 10 stars.

A good rendition

Mr Griffin reads with energy and gives each character a very distinct accent. Mostly this works well, though some of his pronuciation sounds a little strange to a British ear. The hero's name comes out as "Horms" much of the time, and some place names like "Wool-witch" give away that the excellent British accent hides a non-native English speaker :-). That said, this is one of the best Holmes readings available.

Solid Collection

The Complete Stories of Sherlock Holmes, Volume 2 / B003FCIORQ

I really enjoy the Sherlock Holmes stories and books, so I was happy to find this available in audiobook form. The narration isn't as great as I'd like -- the narrator speaks a little too quickly for my tastes and some of his voices (particularly for female characters) sound a little distractingly silly -- but overall this is a solid compilation and I'm happy to have it. Note that while it's the "complete" stories, they're spread across three volumes, so you'll have to buy all three to have the total collection. Speaking of, I really wish the Audible application could show which track corresponds to which story (rather than just Chapter 1, Chapter 2, etc. for the whole kit and kaboodle) but that may be a technical limitation they couldn't get around.

Volume 2 consists of the novel "The Hound of the Baskervilles", and the stories in "Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes" and "The Return of Sherlock Holmes".

"The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes" contains the following stories:
- The Adventure of the Silver Blaze
- The Adventure of the Cardboard Box
- The Adventure of the Yellow Face
- The Adventure of the Stockbroker's Clerk
- The Adventure of the "Gloria Scott"
- The Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual
- The Adventure of the Reigate Squires
- The Adventure of the Crooked Man
- The Adventure of the Resident Patient
- The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter
- The Adventure of the Naval Treaty
- The Adventure of the Final Problem

"The Return of Sherlock Holmes" contains the following stories:
- The Adventure of the Empty House
- The Adventure of the Norwood Builder
- The Adventure of the Dancing Men
- The Adventure of the Solitary Cyclist
- The Adventure of the Priory School
- The Adventure of Black Peter
- The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton
- The Adventure of the Six Napoleons
- The Adventure of the Three Students
- The Adventure of the Golden Pince-Nez
- The Adventure of the Missing Three-Quarter
- The Adventure of the Abbey Grange
- The Adventure of the Second Stain

Awesome Narrator, Unfortunately NOT British

Would you consider the audio edition of The Complete Stories of Sherlock Holmes, Volume 2 to be better than the print version?

No, if a British reader of similar talent to Mr Griffin had been cast it would have been awesome, but his British accents are pretty lousy.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Complete Stories of Sherlock Holmes, Volume 2?

Every exposition of the breakdown by Holmes.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

I loved the dramatic characterisation of the narrator, sadly let down quite severely by his shocking accents.

Who was the most memorable character of The Complete Stories of Sherlock Holmes, Volume 2 and why?

Holmes. Why? He's HOLMES.

Any additional comments?

If you're American or Canadian*, or English is your second language it is likely that this will rock for you. The dramatic performance is wonderful. Griffin is great in that sense. If you're Australian , Kiwi, or South African it will probably be a bit irritating that a British actor wasn't cast to read Sherlock Holmes. Such iconic Victorian literature should be authentic, not hammy.* In my experience North Americans don't pick up on the flaws in bad false UK accents in the way other English-speaking people do. That would have to be a blessing in this case :)

Classic Holmes, perfect voice

This audio book is awesome as it isn't hard to pick up and lay down, but still every time being completely immersed due to Griffin's perfect old school voice.
The sherlock series are also great as they give you insight into manners and customs back in the 19th century. The way they spoke was always amusing and interesting to listen to. Some of the stories can become a bit tedious and absurd, but the majority were quite enjoyable.

I listen to this over and over.

This volume includes The Hound of the Baskervilles, which is so well-crafted and excellently read. i
