Publisher's summary

Having inspired a classic film and Broadway play, The Caine Mutiny is Herman Wouk's boldly dramatic, brilliantly entertaining novel of life—and mutiny—on a Navy warship in the Pacific theater. It was immediately embraced upon its original publication as one of the first serious works of American fiction to grapple with the moral complexities and the human consequences of the Second World War. In the intervening half century, this gripping story has become a perennial favorite, selling millions throughout the world, and claiming the Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

Good Story

This book is a very interesting tale with good characters. There are some exciting parts, but the story plows forward and never gets dull.

Great audio book

Story so compelling. Kevin is an amazing reader. Characters so vivid you feel you know them. Happy 101 Birthday Herman. Thank you for making history so interesting. Loved Winds of War and War and a Remembrance too.

Couldn't stop listening

The great narration gave this wonderful story real life. I just couldn't stop listening even at 1am. Felt as though I'd lost friends when it was over.

Must read

It was above my expectations. I did n't know what to expect. I have never seen the movie version but as I am using audible to catch up on all the books I consider must reads , The Caine Mutiny was at the bottom of my list. Well it definitely moved up. The narration was great, it kept me interested from the beginning to he end. I would recommend it to anyone

Read it in high school and listened again now

I remembered reading this in high school many years ago but couldn't remember the details of the story. I enjoyed it again and probably understood it better this time around.

An Astounding Experience!

I came only recently to appreciate the works of Herman Wouk. I had dismissed "The Winds of War," and "War and Remembrance" based on the glimpses of the terrible mini-series which were broadcast in the 70's and 80's (I think). After listening to Mr. Pariseau's performance of these books, I was soon to learn of how terrible an injustice the television portrayals had visited upon these enormously fine works of history and literature.

As for "The Caine Mutiny," this work of fiction left the others in the dust. The story is compelling, the characters are vivid and fascinating, and the prose is remarkable. But the narration of Mr. Pariseau is (again) amazing. Mr. Pariseau's performance by far exceeds the players from the motion picture of the same name. Mr. Pariseau's Captain Queeg is superior to Mr. Bogart's in every way. (To be fair, while I am no expert, It appears to me that overacting was the norm in cinema for many years--even up to the present time--And this isn't to say that Mr. Bogart and (say) Mr. MacMurray's performance wasn't also sublime--it is just that mr. Pariseau's performance is more "contemparary.")

The bottom line is this: I have never written a review of anything, in any format, for public review before now. And even though I may have not adequately expressed the genius of this book and narration, I wanted to give it a shot, because it is just that good.

EPIC YET INTIMATE

First, as to the audile version, I have to admit I may not have had the patience to read the hardcover book. It's a long book and a long 26 and a half hour audiobook. It's one of those classics I somehow missed in my youth, and I'm glad to have found it as an audiobook. I thought I'd devote a few weeks to listening while doing mundane chores or driving. Instead, I found it so engrossing I listened to the whole thing in five days. Kevin Pariseau is a brilliant narrator, voicing more than a dozen characters, keeping them distinct while remaining unobtrusive as the omniscient narrator.
By today's streamlined standards the pacing of The Caine Mutiny is old-fashioned. It's rather 19th-century in its leisurely pace, and Wouk isn't worried about losing your attention because the title itself is the hook, promising to deliver a climactic event. It starts out slowly, develops slowly, and comes to a conclusion slowly, but it manages to do so without ever becoming boring, because the characters come to life, the dialogue is real, and the relationships complex. The prose may lack poetic grace, but it delivers rich detail and puts life on the page. I'm glad I finally got around to tackling it. It's worth your time.
