Publisher's summary

Having inspired a classic film and Broadway play, The Caine Mutiny is Herman Wouk's boldly dramatic, brilliantly entertaining novel of life—and mutiny—on a Navy warship in the Pacific theater. It was immediately embraced upon its original publication as one of the first serious works of American fiction to grapple with the moral complexities and the human consequences of the Second World War. In the intervening half century, this gripping story has become a perennial favorite, selling millions throughout the world, and claiming the Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

Absolutely amazing! Deserves 10 stars.

Couldn't get enough. So well written and performed that I became emotionally invested. A very relatable story on so many levels.

EXCELLENT NOVEL

I am glad I continued listening. The start of the book was very drawn out. In my opinion this book started to get interesting after chapter 18. I truly had my doubts, but there were so MANY good reviews and I always liked the books by Herman Wouk, so I decided to give it a “listen”, glad I did. It is an excellent book, hard to say that it is his best one, there are still some books by him I want to read. The narrator, mr. Kevin Pariseau, is excellent.
My thanks to all involved, JK.

Wouk won a Pulitzer prize or this with good reason

There are several themes included in this story that earned Herman Wouk a Pulitzer prize in 1951 and became a popular "movie with Humphry Bogart in a major role.
The maturation of the protagonist Willie Keith from a Princeton "preppie" under the thumb of his domineering mother into an independent mature adult,. That maturation is brought about through his experiences in the navy during WW II extending from officer training through his participation in the "mutiny" up to his eventual heroism and leadership
It is also the story of his shipmates who were instigated into rebellion under the influence of of the 'intellectual" but deeply flawed Tom Keefer- a pseudointellectual naval officer and novelist whose cynicism wrecked havoc among the crew and the captain and is eventually revealed by his own cowardice.. It is the story of the flawed captain Queeg whose "by the book" attitude towards his men and hypocrisy led to his downfall..
Finally it a cautionary tale of a modern day "mutiny" reflected in the aphorism of "judge not lest you be judged' That is true today when the 25th amendment is bandied about so much by partisan politicians of all persuasions.
The narration by Kevin Pariseau nd the production is excellent as well.

Not Wouk's Best, But Still VERY Good!

First off, this is NO "Winds of War" or "War and Rememberance", which Wouk is known for. It may seem unfair to compare this book to those two MASTERPIECES, but such is the territory when you write the "War and Peace" of a generation. If you haven't read those two, I recommend you do before you read Caine. It will truly give you a feel for just how genius Wouk was.

I found Caine to be more fluffy and kid-friendly than I had expected. There isn't a lot of action, and you may fid yourself dozing off at times. Where this book excels is in character development. I mean, after all, you know just from the title what's going to happen by the end. Therefore, rich characters are a must, and this book has them! I haven't seen the broadway show, but I can imagine it's very similar to listening to the book. The characters are almost cartoon-like (in a good way), and there aren't many different settings. Again, I know it's unfair to compare this to "Winds of War", but that book had unbelievable settings, all over the world. Caine pretty much keeps things localized on a ship.

Overall, this is a very good story, but not great. There isn't enough tension, and the action is so sparse as to be nonexistent. It's predictable and unbelievable at times. It's a great character piece, written by a master writer, which alone is worth the credit.

The narrator is fantastic, bringing all the characters to life.

I LOVE Herman Wouk.

I just do. I love the way he describes people and events. I love the way he can bring history to life. I love the understanding he brings to the events surrounding WWII. And Kevin Pariseau is a perfect narrator for his style of writing and the characters he invents.

This is one of those books that I should have read years ago, but didn't The title is part of our vernacular (like Catch 22) yet I never really understood where it came from or what it meant. This is such a satisfying listen. The writing is SO flawless. With Wouk I always feel like I'm being treated to the work of one of our greatest writers.

War is Hell, Navy Captains are Worse

I tackled this book as preparation for Wouk’s lengthy THE WINDS OF WAR and the even longer WAR AND REMEMBRANCE, of which I am hoping great things, having been enthralled by the television mini-series of the same name. I was amazed at the well-rounded and fully fleshed out characters. None of them are larger than life hero types, but are realistic: self-doubting at times, overconfident at others. These characters make for engaging reading. The book follows the life journey of just a few central characters and is so authentic that I began to care about them. So, when things begin to turn sour the listener is so invested that empathy is assured. Every event the characters go through becomes a crisis. Every injustice, a tragedy. This is a truly grand story filled by real people.

The book is narrated by Kevin Pariseau who is truly marvel. He handles salty sea dogs and lounge singers with equal mastery. His performance is dramatic without being intrusive, always appropriate, enhancing this already excellent book.

Phenomenal Book

This was an excellent presentation of an incredible book. It was recommended to me as one that would make me drive slower so that I could listen more. It did and I found myself sitting in my driveway to listen just a bit longer. 😄
