Pariseau made the story like listening to an old radio show. Hard to stop listening to.

Wonderful

Great book. Very well read. I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it. The only issue I had was the treatment of black people by Wouk is offensive and the reader does not make it any better and might make it worse.

This book really brought back memories from the Navy, if you serve it all or if you care about society you should listen to this book

Nice long story

The story isn't magnificent but it is interesting up until the last 1/4 then it seems to have trouble tying all the ends together and finishing cleanly. I purchased the DVD of the Bogart movie made after this book and as usual, you get a much richer view of the story from the audio book than you do from the movie. The scenes are well built and you do not need to know much about the Navy or ships to follow along if you are good at taking queues from the context.

I recommend it if you're into military fiction and WWII

An absolutely stunning listen

I enjoyed the movie, but I absolutely loved the book. The narrator pulls off perfection.

one of the all-time great novels

I enjoyed this when I read it the first time, as a teen, but I now realize how very little I got out of it then. Now, as an older man, having served briefly on a destroyer (as civilian PACE professor) in a combat zone, I have a MUCH greater appreciation for this story and the philosophy of it. I would recommend it for young and old alike. It probably helped guide me a bit in growing up, and makes a great deal more sense to me now that I am a cranky, crusty old fart. Now that I have said (writ) my piece, I have to go chase those darned kids off my lawn! ;-)

Marvelous slice of Navy life

I chose this after listening to Winds of War and War And Remembrance because I wanted more of the narrator Kevin P. Was not disappointed. I was drawn in immediately and loved the characters.

a solid tale

overall, an interesting story that kept me wanting to listen. The performance was excellent. My only critique is that the story builds very slowly and in the beginning tends to drag. Otherwise oh, it was very entertaining and I recommend it.
