Publisher's summary

Having inspired a classic film and Broadway play, The Caine Mutiny is Herman Wouk's boldly dramatic, brilliantly entertaining novel of life—and mutiny—on a Navy warship in the Pacific theater. It was immediately embraced upon its original publication as one of the first serious works of American fiction to grapple with the moral complexities and the human consequences of the Second World War. In the intervening half century, this gripping story has become a perennial favorite, selling millions throughout the world, and claiming the Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

Ending disappointing

What made the experience of listening to The Caine Mutiny the most enjoyable?

I loved the narrator. He made this book

Would you be willing to try another book from Herman Wouk? Why or why not?

Yes. Overall I love the history he puts in his books

Which character – as performed by Kevin Pariseau – was your favorite?

Willie. I just loved the character. He brought him to life.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. I was just too much. I needed breaks sometimes for days

Any additional comments?

The ending was very lack luster. The way the court Marshall ended was very anticlimactic,

The Story IS Timeless

What made the experience of listening to The Caine Mutiny the most enjoyable?

Herman Wouk is one of the most graceful insightful writers I enjoy reading. Picking up this book written so many years ago, I thought it would be outdated and possibly corny. Instead it was a compelling historical journey into the mentality of World II with delicious detail and suspense. I'm going to reread/listen Winds of War and War and Remembrance soon.

What did you like best about this story?

The everyday lingo and crisp descriptions of the submarine's smell and textures. The sympathetic and tolerant creation of imperfect characters is unique to Wouk.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

I wish Humphrey Bogart were alive to do the remake.

Another good WWII story

I have a long commute so I like longer books and Wouk makes the story last without going boring. Characters are believable if not somewhat crazy at times.

good book good listen

I enjoyed this story and the author does a really good job of describing life on a ship during world war ii. the characters are vividly described. I thought the ending was a little abrupt.

Better than the movie!

Although I had been a fan of the movie for many years, I was unaware that the film had been based on a Herman Wouk novel, and because of this I was initially hesitant to read it, because I had never been a big fan of “the winds of war“ or “war and remembrance“. I always find historical fiction to be a little irritating lol, anyway, This fantastic version is well worth your time and money. The narrator does such a good job you actually forget that Humphrey Bogart originally held the main role as the captain of the Cain.
My only issue, is the insertion of the romantic claptrap. Much like the movie it’s slow down the pace of the book, and as far as I can tell serves no real useful purpose.

A masterpiece

Would you consider the audio edition of The Caine Mutiny to be better than the print version?

Yes the audio edition gave more width to the characters

What did you like best about this story?

The psychological subtleties about the different characters.

What does Kevin Pariseau bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

A wonderful interpretation able to make each character sound with his/her own voice

If you could rename The Caine Mutiny, what would you call it?

Learn from your mistakes

Any additional comments?

Even if you watched the movie you should not miss the original novel

Did not disappoint...

... and left no plot detail unaddressed. Wow. Stellar. I'm upset I wasn't reading this with a book club, there are so many discussions to be had from it.
