Publisher's summary

From the acclaimed Nobel Prize winner: Two girls who grow up to become women. Two friends who become something worse than enemies. This brilliantly imagined novel brings us the story of Nel Wright and Sula Peace, who meet as children in the small town of Medallion, Ohio.

Nel and Sula's devotion is fierce enough to withstand bullies and the burden of a dreadful secret. It endures even after Nel has grown up to be a pillar of the black community and Sula has become a pariah. But their friendship ends in an unforgivable betrayal—or does it end? Terrifying, comic, ribald and tragic, Sula is a work that overflows with life.

A strange and interesting story, worth the read

...always a treat to hear the author read their own stories and Tony Morrison, none better. This story is a little strange but still interesting and in many ways comes across as ahead of its time.

Sukarno

Superbly written and read. There are so many rich layers to this story of lifelong girlfriends. I read this book 40 years ago but it speaks to me now in a new and deeply meaningful way. This is a classic tale.

So Many Cinematic Sentences

There are lines in here that are pure Black poetry. The world building as detailed and majestic in its lore as the lands of Jean Toomer’s “Cane.” The story between two black women friends at the center of the piece is also rare and fully realized. Just flawless work here.

Didn't enjoy this one

Great author and beautiful descriptions, but I couldn't get into the story and did not finish. It was a struggle to get through just half of the book. I do like her other books, but I just couldn't with this one.
