"Diverting historical fiction with a light touch"

Georgette Heyer had a very successful career writing historical romance set in the Regency period. Her work is characterized by dry humor and a restrained attitude toward the physical aspects of romance. These books emphasize the social and emotional relationships of the characters rather than purely physical. They also require some historical knowledge and the ability to understand Regency slang from context. The books are funny and intricately plotted with a happy close.

Sir Gareth Ludlow is about to propose to his friend, Lady Hester, because he needs to marry to continue his family line. On his way to propose he meets a young woman in trouble. Attempting to resolve her problems takes the efforts of Sir Gareth and Lady Hester, who come to a closer understanding as a result. The story is light-hearted and has a number of different plot lines, all of which are resolved satisfactorily in the end.

Sian Phillips is a competent narrator with a dry delivery that is an excellent match for Heyer's work. While her voice is a little hoarse to be completely convincing as the very young Amanda, on the whole her characterizations are excellent. Ms Phillips also read Bath Tangle, by Heyer, but her work on that recording is slightly below the high standards she met for Sprig Muslin. On the whole I can recommend this recording as the book is amusing and the narrator adds to the experience.

What did you love best about Sprig Muslin?

The fact that the Hero and Heroine are a different sort....and that the story takes you on a journey....

"I miss these kinds of romance stories"

First read this book about 30 years ago, and always enjoyed the author. It's an old fashioned romance without the graphic sex scenes. It was truly a breath of fresh air.

    "Good book"

I think that Georgette Heyer's books are great. I am never embarrassed by bad language, the haphazard usage of the 4 letter words. If they can't find a substitute don't write. These books are a joy to listen to.

    "Thoroughly Enjoyable"

This is not one of my favourite Heyer books, but this is such an EXCELLENT audio version I can see I will be 're-reading' it often. Sian Phillips is an incredible narrator.

    "Funny and Sweet"

This was quite entertaining. The narrator is perfect for this story and she did an excellent job with the various voices, adding emotions to the characters. I recommend the Audible edition of this book. I don't think I would have enjoyed it half as much simply reading it.

Like historical fiction, Christian fiction/romance, classics, children's/teen fiction, fantasy. Paranormal is okay. No witchcraft/vampires.

    "My first Georgette Heyer read"

I've heard that Georgette Heyer is similar to Jane Austen, which is why I've since purchased several Heyer books when they were on sale. This is the first I have read/listened to. I loved it. It reminded me of Sense and Sensibility but was funnier and less tragic. If you like Jane Austen, I recommend Heyer. However, I have also read that Heyer books are very clean. This is true, but there's a lot of sexual innuendo in this particular book, with references to "natural" siblings, mistresses and petticoat lines. The narrator was outstanding. I'm almost afraid to listen to a Heyer book that is NOT read by Sian Phillips. It was PERFECT. She reminds me of Juliet Stephenson.

Highly recommended to traditional Regency fans and fans of Jane Austen.
