Publisher's summary

Who has not dreamed of life on an exotic isle, far away from civilization? Here is the novel that has inspired countless imitations by lesser writers, none of which equal the power and originality of Defoe's famous book. Robinson Crusoe, set ashore on an island after a terrible storm at sea, is forced to make do with only a knife, some tobacco, and a pipe.

He learns how to build a canoe, make bread, and endure endless solitude. That is, until, 24 years later, when he confronts another human being. First published in 1719, Robinson Crusoe has been praised by such writers as James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, and Samuel Johnson as one of the greatest novels in the English language.

Poor narration

Narration is awfully difficult to follow. Bizarre pauses in the middle of sentences and emphasis on random words throughout.

What. Is. Wrong. With. This. Narrator?

Incredible job - i have never known a book to be so utterly destroyed by the narration. Strange pauses, emphasis on random words...

If i had to guess i'd say this was the result of a computer translating written to speech

A great story, and an incredible job of making that story totally unenjoyable!!!

Narrator. Reads with. Strange. Pauses.

Robinson Crusoe captured my imagination years ago in spite of culturally offensive attitudes of the author's day. However, the bizarre and sense-muddling syncopation of this narrator is hard to bear. It would be difficult to exaggerate how bad it is. The reader's tone is ok, but the rhythm is so far off and so independent of the punctuation, that it's actually a challenge to follow the story. It's a no for me.

Alan Munro doesn't understand punctuation

Alan Munro is the worst. I can't do 13+ hours of him talking. He interjects commas where there aren't any and pauses so often that he sounds like a parody of William Shatner.

He's got a great, deep voice, and I'm sure someone told him it was made for radio. While that may be true, I don't think his talents or abilities make this the right job for him. Perhaps something more unscripted would work.

Review

The story was very good but the narrator spoke in short choppy monotone which detracted from the overall enjoyment of the book.

Wonderful

The pauses annoyed me but I liked the overall narration. I thought the slow speech emphasized the solitary aspect of the story.

Inspiring classic story with huge life lessons!

Liked the narrator style very much as he sounded like he was telling a story as a “real” person would (not like a professional reader).
Having listened to this story, and this same narrator, several times, I pick up more and more wisdom and practical learning, and transforming, enduring Christian truths as the captivating classic story unfolds.

Cadence Dear Sir....cadence!

Only three things you need to know about this audio version of a classic....#1.the narrator reads with a soothing voice, but...#2 the rhythm that he reads the story in is very broken up with WAY too many pauses at very unnecessary places. He pauses 2-3 in a sentence making a single thought of Mr Robinson turn into three broken up pieces. #3 He educates people that even an all time classic can be ruined with a bad narration. Over 200 titles listened to, and this is by far the most butchered one I've experienced. Please head the warning!

A Classic Must-Read Survival Story

Now I understand why, at the time of it's original publishing, that this story was nearly as widely printed and translated as the Bible itself. Imagine living at that time when the New World was just being discovered and reading tales like this. It's extremely well written and doesn't feel like fiction at all, for the most part. The ending story is a bit silly, but overall the book is wonderful and takes you on a cozy island adventure.

Alan Munro isn't the most exciting narrator to listen to. He has a great voice, but he lacks the passion of others. He didn't do a bad job though. It's great to listen to this story around bedtime. As another reviewer wrote 'this man's voice can cure insomnia'.

I highly highly recommend this book, especially at this very cheap price. Worth every penny.
