Publisher's Summary

Robinson Crusoe, first published in 1719, was Defoe’s first novel and survives as his best-known work. Loosely based on a true account of a Scottish sailor—Alexander Selkirk—it is a tale of one man’s fall from grace and progress to redemption. The account of Crusoe’s life, scratched out with rationed indigo ink on a dwindling supply of paper salvaged from the hull of a wrecked ship, speaks eloquently of the tenacity and ingenuity of the human spirit.

    Story
    "A picture in time"

Robinson Crusoe is a classic that is alluded to in other literature. It is also considered the first English novel. For those reasons, it is worth reading.

However, the story wanders and often retraces its steps. As a result, it was a wonderful bedtime read to help me fall asleep.

It was also a fascinating look into the early 18th century mind. It is unabashedly racist. White supremacy abounds. The humble pride of the narrator was laughable.

I am glad that I read this book, and it lends itself to discussion. The reader was excellent. All in all the book is a good glimpse into the past, encouraging me that we do live in a better time.

    Story
"Not the literary masterpiece I expected"

I know this is supposed to be a literary masterpiece but I found it lacking. Specifically:
    - the story is told for several chapters and the retold in the reading of Robinsons journal.
    - Crusoe has many advantages for being deserted on an island. Tools, guns, gun powder and ammo that lasts 30+ years(?). He grows corn, rice and barley and has goat milk, cheese?
    - there was little depth to the character and after a while I found I didn't even like him.

    Story
    "Very good, very old!"

I was after a true, classic adventure survival story. Stemming from my recent love for a survival video game called Minecraft. I wanted a really detailed step-by-step adventure. Robinson Caruso gave me just this!

It is quite obvious that this story was written a very long time ago (one of the first of its kind). On a side note - the vast differences between normal life back then and now (slaves, racism, communication etc.) actually provide some wonderful incite into human nature and social development.

The story is a true epic; adventure, action, disaster and overwhelming joy. It really gives you an appreciation for what you have and how to make the best of a bad situation.

Many lesions to learn and fun to be had. Lovely story, I would certainly recommend this book to anyone! Enjoy.

The voice recording was done quite some time ago and is not flawless. Never the less, a good performance.

    "Survival on a desert island"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes I would recommend it as its a classic, but also an insight to life 300 years ago

What other book might you compare Robinson Crusoe to, and why?

There are plenty of castaway tales and each has its own merits

Which character – as performed by Ron Keith – was your favourite?

Is this a trick question!!!! Why Robinson Crusoe of course.

    Any additional comments?

This book has moments where it is hard going but given that it was written 300 years ago, it is still an amazing piece of writing. If this had been written today, Mr Crusoe would not have survived without 1. the app "How to survive on a desert island" 2. A stash of prozac, 3. The reality film crew. However he used his ingenuity, and strength of mind to survive which makes it an interesting read.

    "Excellent narration."

This was a very engaging performance by the narrator. He really helped bring the story to life, especially with the different voices towards the later part of the tale. I thoroughly recommend this spoken version.
