Pride and Prejudice | [Jane Austen]

Pride and Prejudice

A delightful novel about "how girls catch husbands." Listen in to find out: What will happen to sister Lydia? Will the arrogant Lady Catherine de Burgh's intrigues be foiled? Will sister Jane marry Mr. Bingley? And especially, will Elizabeth, cured of her prejudice, and Mr. Darcy, cured of his pride, fall into each other's arms? Listeners will also savor the wit, the sly irony and satire and comedy that Miss Austen crowds into almost every quiet, well-bred line of this novel.

Listeners will also savor the wit, the sly irony and satire and comedy that Miss Austen crowds into almost every quiet, well-bred line of this novel. There is great sanity, common sense and worldly wisdom to be found in her exploration of human nature.

Sir Walter Scott said, Jane Austen had "that exquisite touch which renders ordinary commonplace things and characters interesting." This quality provides today's listeners of Pride and Prejudice with a fascinating trip into the lives of the privileged in England during the 18th century.

"A great story to make the end of an era"

Here we have then Bennet sisters facing a similar situation as in Sense and Sensibility. No male heirs to take over the family estate and fortune. For some reason their father made some silly deal to give it to his nephew. When the nephew comes to call to set everyone’s mind at ease it’s a disaster. He tried to get the sister to marry and him and when he’s spurred enough he leave. What does he do? Read to find out. Then each sister gets mixed up with guys and are made to look silly, brilliant and human. In the end all the matters are solved, somehow. Well, read to find out.

"Book is great, reader is not"

One of my favorite books, but the reader is not very skilled at differentiating between character voices. Sometimes the speed at which she reads is so fast that savoring the language and social satire is quite impossible. There are many better-read renditions out there!

    "A classic deserves outstanding presentation!"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

No, I am very familiar with this Austen work having read it and seen several cinematic iterations. I was hoping this audio version would add a new and enjoyable dimension to my experience of it. I was disappointed!

What other book might you compare Pride and Prejudice to and why?

A Christmas Carol (Dickens) narrated by Dennis Olsen. Any of the Harry Potter series narrated by Stephen Fry. The comparison is not of the stories but the standard of narration - in particular the interpretation and portrayal of the range of characters. The two examples I've provided are truly outstanding in that regard. As an author myself, I would only want the finest standard of narration to be applied to my work. Jane Austen would be disappointed with Sharon Williams vocal presentation of many of the characters - characters with whom we are already so familiar.

Did Sharon Williams do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

No. She didn't capture the ages nor the personalities many of the characters with which we are so familiar. Elizabeth sounded haughty and strident at times - a contrast to her character as created by Austen, and it was often difficult to distinguish between her and her mother!

Was Pride and Prejudice worth the listening time?

This is a repeat of the first question. The answer is the same.

    Any additional comments?

    No.

"LOVE the story...did not like the reader."
What disappointed you about Pride and Prejudice?

I love the story!!! I found the voice grating and too fast. It made my favorite book of all times sound silly and stupid.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Sharon Williams?

    YES!!!

"A fine performance of a beloved book."
Where does Pride and Prejudice rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I would rate this performance quite high. I listened to quite a few before I settled on this edition and I'm glad I did.

What other book might you compare Pride and Prejudice to and why?

Pride & Prejudice is one of the original romance novels. Lizzy Bennett is strong-willed and Mr. Darcy is dream-worthy. But we already know that, don't we?

Which character – as performed by Sharon Williams – was your favorite?

I thought her narrative voice was very engaging. Pride & Prejudice relies on it equally to those of the speaking characters so it was important that she gave it the right flair. I believe she did.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

The book is already made into many films and I would not presume I could do it better.
