Publisher's summary

Persuasion, Jane Austen's final novel, follows the romance of Anne Elliot and naval officer Frederick Wentworth. They were happily engaged until Anne's friend, Lady Russell, persuaded her that Frederick was "unworthy". Now, eight years later, Frederick returns, a wealthy captain in the navy, while Anne's family teeters on the edge of bankruptcy. They still love each other, but their past mistakes threaten to keep them apart.

Worst version imaginable

The narrator reads too fast, with no emmotion, and no pauses for punctuation. She sounds almost mechanical in her reading, and has turned an amazing novel into a tedious, barely intelligible verbal race to reach the next chapter on a single breath. Don't waste your money, select another version.

Good book; bad recording

I enjoyed the story very much. The narrator spoke a little too quickly sometimes, and it jumped several times, skipping at least a few sentences here and there. There's a reason it's cheap. I love Jane Austen, though, and here she excels once again at creating compelling, realistic characters.

you'll have to listen at warp speed on this one

Not sure how I ended up with this version, but I don't think this narrator took a breath through the whole book. She reads at warp speed, but I can't listen at warp speed, and the hissing sound of her 'S's grated on my nerves...

Bad Recording and Narrator is irritating

This is the first time I have ever felt so motivated to write a bad review. The narrator was so irritating that I found it hard to listen to the story. She did improve slightly by the end of the book, but it was painful.

There were also recording issues with this book, a couple of places the story either skipped the end of a sentence or repeated it.

I LOVE Jane Austen and this was really disappointing.

can't stand listening to the reader

I love this book, but I could not listen to it. The reader speaks too fast and has no inflection at all- sort of sounded like a computer reading. If you love Jane Austen try a different production.

Speed Reader

The reader had a good voice, but she read so fast I thought she must have been paid for words per minute. There were no pauses, no inflection, and no emotion. This is my favorite Jane Austin book, but I couldn't listen to such poor reading.

Could not finish owing to awful reading

We purchased this to listen to during a long drive. Previously we'd listened to Austen's Emma the same way. For this book we had to shut the playback off after less than 20 minutes; neither I nor my wife could stand to listen to it.

The reader rushes, there are no pauses for any kind of punctuation or between paragraphs. There is no expression, no sense that the reader understands what is meant for humor, or pathos, or satire. It is one flat, rapid, breathless, high-pitched gobble.

Can we have the 7.95 back, please?

Narrator races through in a monotone

Couldn't even listen to more than 10 minutes of this because of the narration. Now I always listen to the samples. Sorry I didn't get another narrator for this story.

Great story, but the narrator speaks too quickly

Peta Johnson has a nice voice but races through the story with little intonation. You need to listen carefully to not miss sections of the dialogue and description. I had to repeatedly backtrack and re-listen to sections to make sure I didn't miss something. The story itself is wonderful, of course!

BAD editingn

Robot narrator! Absolutely no deflection if speech! Pleasant voice so I attribute to simply bad sound engineering. Audible, delete this version, PLEASE, and offer a more palliative option...for the sake of dear Jane!
