Publisher's summary

Few novels have had as profound an impact on American culture as On the Road. Pulsating with the rhythms of 1950s underground America, jazz, sex, illicit drugs, and the mystery and promise of the open road, Kerouac’s classic novel of freedom and longing defined what it meant to be “beat” and has inspired generations of writers, musicians, artists, poets, and seekers who cite their discovery of the book as the event that “set them free”. Based on Kerouac’s adventures with Neal Cassady, On the Road tells the story of two friends whose four cross-country road trips are a quest for meaning and true experience. Written with a mixture of sad-eyed naïveté and wild abandon, and imbued with Kerouac’s love of America, his compassion for humanity, and his sense of language as jazz, On the Road is the quintessential American vision of freedom and hope, a book that changed American literature and changed anyone who has ever picked it up. This edition commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of the first publication of the novel in 1957 and will be a must-have for any literature lover.

Phenomenal Performance by Patton

I can't imagine anyone else reading this story. Patton's voice is Kerouac's voice-- more specifically, Patton's Dean Moriarty is the closest to life the character has ever been. I'm blown away.

4.5 Stars - One of a Kind Duo

Pairing Will Patton with On the Road provides an excellent listen that is both witty and insightful. The book itself felt one of a kind, and the characters truly alive. Some plot items did not follow through which left me questioning, but maybe that's simply reflective of the life they live.

I get why hitchhiking got popular

The story was OK. It was the descriptive writing that hooked me. I totally get why hitchhiking got popular in the beatnick days!

Brilliantly Not What I Expected

Truman Capote's acerbic summary of On the Road, "That's not writing, that's typing," is all I knew of it from the time I was first aware of the book--sometime in the early '70s. So I never read it.. But this year (2021) I decided to do the audio book, and it's interpretation by Will Patton was spot-on and vivacious. From the first paragraph I was hooked. There wasn't a slow or dull moment to be had.

Beyond spectacular

Will Patton does not read this story but rather performs it with all of the brilliance, joy and other worldly inspiration that Jack Kerouac’s novel deserves.

The world is great, this book is not.

Great performance by Will Patton.
The book is simple and naive. Leave the book and explore the world on the road yourself - life's beautiful.
