Publisher's Summary

Nineteen Eighty-Four is a classic dystopian novel by English author George Orwell. Published in 1949, it is set in the eponymous year and focuses on a repressive, totalitarian regime. Read by gritty and accomplished actor Philip Glenister from the acclaimed crime series Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes. The story follows the life of one seemingly insignificant man, Winston Smith, a civil servant assigned the task of falsifying records and political literature, thus effectively perpetuating propaganda, who grows disillusioned with his meagre existence and so begins an ultimately futile rebellion against the system.

The novel has become famous for its portrayal of surveillance and society's increasing encroachment on the rights of the individual. Since its publication, the terms Big Brother and Orwellian have entered the popular vernacular. This is a special celebratory release to celebrate 60 years since Nineteen Eighty-Four was first published.

The narrating of this masterpiece is absolutely amazing. The changes in voice for different characters brought it alive. People say that the little interludes of classical music was disconcerning, but I reckon that it made it seem ever more realistic. The tracks fitted perfectly with the story and flowed brilliantly.
A+. A must read. And a wonderful audiobook.

"Beyond brilliant - a true visionary."

The only mistake Orwell makes is in being a bit premature with his predictions. A riveting story that could so easily come to be if we are not careful. A must read as is his Animal Farm as well.

"Excellent narration brings 1984 alive in 2009"

It's some years since I read 1984 and the surprise about this novel is how it has retained its relevance since it's first publication. It is as applicable to modern society as it was when first written. 1984 is not a light listen. It's a thought provoking tale of manipulative social engineering and the loss of both freedom of speech and thought.

Philip Glennister's narration is first class. In particular, his soft Irish O'Brien brought the character alive for me. I doubt that his reading of this classic novel can be surpassed.

The only negative, in my opinion, is the classical music that plays inbetween chapters. I like classical music and I like audio books but not combined! I found it irksome and didn't appreciate the interruption to the flow of the narration.
Although it was not to my taste, it was not enough to spoil the enjoyment of the superb reading and interpretation of the words of Orwell delivered by Glennister.

    "Thought provoking stuff"

This extraordinary book was really brought to life by Phillip Glenister's understated performance. The book still appears on the GCSE and A level syllabus, and for good reason. The inevitability of Winston's fate and the suffocating atmosphere of the world he lives in is peopled by extraordinary characters and images which are truly unforgettable. If I had one small criticism it would be Glenister's "Irish" accent for the voice of O'Brien, not great! The addition of music is unobtrusive and adds to the atmosphere of tragedy. An audio book can ever replace having a paper copy of classic book in your possession but, done well it is an excellent complement. And this is done very well. You NEED to this audio book in your library!

    "Wow."
What did you like most about Nineteen Eighty-Four?

Everything. I read Animal Farm a few days ago and thought it was the best book I have ever read. Then I read this book. This is now the best book I have ever read.

I almost felt I diddn't need to read 1984. Like I had the general gist of it. But nothing prepares you for the actual book. I know you probably think you don't need to read it, but you do. You won't regret it.

I can't think of any book I have ever read that is as smart, insightful, cunningly written, thought provoking, and drenched in beautiful bitter irony. Nothing I have ever read is on the level of this book.

    WAR IS PEACE
    FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
    IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH

Who was your favorite character and why?

Winston. You really feel yourself inside the main character, even more than normally in fiction, George Orwell does a masterfull job of having you feel his pain, his hopes.
Big Brother is watching you. Your right there, in Winston, in room 101, and you know that if you were in his shoes, it would have turned out just the same.

Which character – as performed by Philip Glenister – was your favourite?

    O-Brien.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. Very hard to stop listening.

Would you try another book written by George Orwell or narrated by Philip Glenister?

Loved animal farm, but homage to Catalonia was boring as sin. Was recommended this. Interesting world, completely underused.

Would you be willing to try another book from George Orwell? Why or why not?

Nah, I feel like he's had enough of my time now.

What does Philip Glenister bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

    Unnecessary accents.

Did Nineteen Eighty-Four inspire you to do anything?

    Nope.

    Any additional comments?

He built the world in which the story took place to be a really interesting place, then completely underused it. I feel like he'd have been better off writing a 4 page article in the sunday times about government over reach and surveillance etc etc.

What made the experience of listening to Nineteen Eighty-Four the most enjoyable?

The performance was great and the story is very interesting even if it is not a new concept anymore it put a different light on it. Also when you take into perspective then it was written it scares you how some how some things are accurate.

What does Philip Glenister bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

He doesn't express emotions when he reads which make it you feel like you observe this dystopian world from a distance.

    "Phenomenal book - brilliantly read"
If you could sum up Nineteen Eighty-Four in three words, what would they be?

    Seminal and prosaic

What did you like best about this story?

One of the most important works of fiction of the 20th century (only 'just' fiction given its social realism and relevance). Should be read by every teenager and re-read by every adult.

What does Philip Glenister bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Does a great job at breaking up the parts and characters.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
