Publisher's summary

Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.

Dorothea Brooke is an outstanding heroine; Middlemarch is filled with characters that are vivid and true, comic and moving. It is one of the greatest novels in the English language.

It’s never too late to be swept away by a classic
"Despite many recommendations and glowing reviews for the George Eliot classic, I’ll admit I was intimidated by its length. Now, I’m sorry I waited as long to hear this magnificent classic novel as I did. I am NOT sorry that I chose the edition narrated by the unparalleled Juliet Stevenson. It’s timeless, beautiful, and flawlessly narrated. Do not be afraid to give yourself over to this enduring classic romance."

Performance is flawless

This is a classic because it’s by George Eliot but Juliet Stevenson deserves equal credit because her performance is flawless!
I really enjoyed hearing all of the 19th Century accents that she did. It increased the depth of the novel for me and underscored class differences.

Great!

Incredible narration. How could she do so many characters so wonderfully?
The story is timeless and deeply written. Long, but continuously interesting.

A Favorite Classic

Important, meaningful, and so interesting. Its a commitment to read but well worth the effort. Dorothea is one of the most important historic female characters in the literary catalogue of classic English literature (move over Austen gals). You will be rewarded if you can stick with this tome to the end.

Slow but Good

I enjoyed the end, but it is a very slow story with a lot of plots and a lot of time spent developing the stories. I wish the chapter introductions were all in English.

A timeless piece of fiction

This has to be among the greatest pieces of fiction in the English language. narrator Juliet Steveveson does an excellent job with Elliot’s complex prose style, which takes a chapter to appreciate, and gives each character a recognizable voice. I may revisit this long tale again in the future.

Sad when it ended!

Be patient, it took me a couple of chapters to get into the flow of the story, but it was so worth it! The narrator is outstanding, truly. I became so involved with the characters. Eliot's insights into marriage are thought-provoking.
