Can you go wrong with Dickens? Well, yes. No disputing that D. was a great author, and this books has great moments, the usual vivid characters, and a very funny view of the Englishman in America. The added bonus with this author is that he was an actor, very aware of the way his books would sound read aloud--as they most often were. Too bad the same care was not taken with this recording. Sound quality is very bad--hard to hear in the car. And though Flo Gibson really does a competent read here, she will never be a favorite of mine. So the combination of muffled production and a less than ideal reader make this one a disappointment.
Audible's recordings of Charles Dickens's works had enchanted me and made me want to hear all of them. Then I downloaded this one. Usually, there have been several readers from whom to choose, but only one was available for this book. What a disappointment! First of all, the quality of the recording is poor. Second -- and perhaps the worse of my two complaints -- the reader's voice is monotonous and she chops sentences up into phrases that obscure Dicken's great sense of humor and destroy the flow of the story.
Unfortunately the American woman reader has a cadence that makes it difficult to pay attention to the meaning of the sentences. Would advise to wait until it is redone with another reader
