Publisher's summary

The most famous and controversial novel from one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century tells the story of Humbert Humbert’s obsessive, devouring, and doomed passion for the nymphet Dolores Haze.

"The conjunction of a sense of humor with a sense of horror [results in] satire of a very special kind."
—The New Yorker

Awe and exhilaration—along with heartbreak and mordant wit—abound in Lolita, which tells the story of the aging Humbert Humbert's obsession for the nymphet Dolores Haze. Lolita is also the story of a hypercivilized European colliding with the cheerful barbarism of postwar America.

Most of all, it is a meditation on love—love as outrage and hallucination, madness and transformation.

Critic reviews

One of TIME Magazine's All-Time 100 Novels

"Lolita blazes with a perversity of a most original kind. For Mr. Nabokov has distilled from his shocking material hundred-proof intellectual farce…Lolita seems an assertion of the power of the comic spirit to wrest delight and truth from the most outlandish materials. It is one of the funniest serious novels I have ever read; and the vision of its abominable hero, who never deludes or excuses himself, brings into grotesque relief the cant, the vulgarity, and the hypocritical conventions that pervade the human comedy." —The Atlantic Monthly

"Intensely lyrical and wildly funny." —Time

"The only convincing love story of our century." —Vanity Fair

The Greatest Book I Never Wanted to Love

Wow. Jeremy Irons and Vladmir Nabokov are amazing! Exemplary voice acting and writing that creates a movie in your mind.

Always listen to alone. There were several spots where I was listening to it on speaker and had several people look at me like I was a nutcase.

:P

Not your father's 1955

I bet this book did shock the world. Fascinating fiction, distasteful but such wonderful language. Jeremiah Irons channels H.H. and his perverse love of his nymphet.

A beautifully written, elegantly performed drama

The writing is so poetic and descriptive. It turns a tragic story into a beautifully written and well versed experience. The excellent reader is the same as the actor in the film, so his voice brings the book to life.

Perfect performance of a diificult classic

Would you listen to Lolita again? Why?

I will listen to this repeatedly both for the magnificent prose and perfect realization of a very difficult character.

What other book might you compare Lolita to and why?

Lolita is virtually unique wringing comedy, pathos and longing out of horror. Perhaps in feel and subject The Ginger Man would be vaguely related.

What about Jeremy Irons’s performance did you like?

Perfect in every aspect, sad, horrible, comedic, pathetic, scarily matter-of-fact. Finds essential humanness is unexpected ways. Beautifully paced. Most Audible books are better off being simplly well read. In this case, Mr Irons special skills make all the difference.

Absolutely Beautiful

The story is beautiful, persuasive, and strange. At times I felt sick upon realizing the depth of sympathy felt for HH. Don't let the prolog turn you off from listening to this book, the narrators voice changes drastically with the opening of the story.

Exquisite

Wonderfully read by mr. Irons!
Stunning opening third, a rather dreary midsection but a satisfying ending. A perfect way to enjoy this classic.

Beautifully tragic book, fantastic narration

What does Jeremy Irons bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I think this is the first time that I've genuinely preferred the narrated version to actually reading the novel. Irons is that good - his grasp of the emotional impact, absurdity and tragedy of different parts of the novel is evident throughout.

Any additional comments?

I have been "re-reading" books via audible during my commute these past few years, and without question this is one of my favorites. Nabokov was a genius, and no body does it better than Irons.

Conversational

The conversational style of the narrator kept me interested throughout. I'm working my way through the Classics. The main character is vile and the story is disturbing, but it's almost like a conversation with him over coffee.

Perhaps best audiobook performance EVER

What made the experience of listening to Lolita the most enjoyable?

Jeremy Irons lives this book in this performance. Maybe it's because he acted in a film version of the movie or maybe it's because he's actually superhuman as a reader. The book comes alive in new ways, and I've read the book multiple times and seen all film versions of Nabokov's true masterpiece. Irons gets into Humbert's head and dwells there while we listen. Astounding.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Humbert Humbert--only one of the richest characters in all of 20th-century literature.

What does Jeremy Irons bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Irons IS Humbert but not only in the sense that's he's acting out Humbert's fantasies and life. Because the books is a first person narrative story, Irons is able to generate a unique energy in her performance.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not quite all in one sitting, no. But I couldn't turn it off and I had to actually pull my car over on the highway because some of Nabokov's sentences, and Irons' delivery of them, stopped my heart for a few minutes.

Powerful writing!

What did you love best about Lolita?

I almost passed on this book because of the subject matter. Nabokov takes us into the mind of a predator and I felt the truth of it. He never describes sexual acts but you feel the taint. He has a gift for words; you feel it without needing to be told what the feeling is supposed to be. H.H.'s perspective is so clear and tangible to the reader that it's a bit disconcerting. I would read anything this author writes; I was very impressed with his talents.

What about Jeremy Irons’s performance did you like?

Jeremy Iron's was perfect for this performance. Superior writing can be lost with a poor performance, but Jeremy nailed it, enhanced it and put me in the mind of H.H.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

The subject matter is heavy and sometimes I needed to stop and absorb it, but it was hard to put down.
