Publisher's summary

Jo March, the irrepressible tomboy in Little Women, has grown up and married her professor to become Jo Bhaer. Together the Bhaers have established Plumfield - a warm-hearted, informal school where lessons are taught with a dose of laughter. When Nat, a young orphan joins the happy household at Plumfield, he can’t believe his good fortune. Each day is filled with studying and fun - the boys even enjoy Saturday-night pillow fights. But when Nat gets caught stretching the truth, he discovers there is more to learn in his new home than games and schoolwork.

Filled with real-life characters and situations, Louisa M. Alcott’s spirited classic has touched the hearts and minds of young people from generation to generation. Barbara Caruso’s dramatic narration transports young adults to the late 1800s when life was simpler but was still packed with plenty of adventures.

Captivating performance

Barbara Caruso's warm, maternal voice brings this narrative of post-Civil War era America to life, telling the adventures and mishaps of the boys at Plumfield when Jo March is all grown up and managing a family of her own.

Little Boys and Baby Voices

Any additional comments?

Lovely book, but it is nothing like Little Women. It was written for children and their enjoyment. It is mostly about how children play, get into trouble and quickly find their way out it. The 12 year old Daisy is read like she is a 2 year old and that annoyed me a bit. I got about 6 hours into it and quit.

Very Well Narrated

I enjoyed the narration on this title a little better than Little Women. I don't know if the narrator improved or I'm just familiar with her now.

Little Men is another book I have enjoyed for as long as I can remember. In some ways I like it better than Little Women.

Love this book

This has been one of my favorite books since I was a child. I used to listen to it over and over again. It’s definitely a classic, it’s not necessarily fast paced or action packed. It’s more about enjoying a simple, pure story about good and kind people. there aren’t too many of those around these days.

Great, moral story for the young audience

I enjoyed Little Women, so I continued with Little Men. Little Men was a bit more casual and aimed at a younger audience than Little Women, but I still enjoyed it. Barbara Caruso (narrator) did a "first rate" job (to quote the story) narrating.

A Pure Stream

This rendition of Little Men is such a contrast to today’s media faire! It is a pure stream of positive messages. No matter that it could be said that society has changed and moved on since 1871 —this story is still pointing to a better world and how to get there.
Modern readers may find it preachy - but the messages, to me, are timeless.
The narration is very fitting for this story, as well. Glad that Audible picked up this recording.

A read aloud for children

A collection of short vignettes in the lives of the boys at Plumfield. This one dragged for me. It’s sappy and sweet, full of all the virtuous anecdotes and moral lessons that characterized Little Women. All manner of ill temper and willfulness are smoothed over by the patient love of the Bahrs.

I think had it been a good deal shorter, or perhaps combined with Jo’s Boys (I’ve yet to listen to that one) it would have been more enjoyable. I wanted the boys to grow up, and make their way in the world. This novel is completely devoid of romance. And though there is lots of mention of Mr. Bahr, he always feels like a kind hearted old uncle, not the man Jo actually fell in love with and married. There are far more heart to heart conversations with Laurie than Fredric.

If you like the ups and downs of a children’s tale, this one is well written and engaging. I could see reading it aloud to kids. Maybe someday I’ll read it to my boys. For myself though I wanted more progression in the plot, and some romance. Reader did a great job, I enjoyed her style.

It’s always disappointing in these old fashioned novels, like LM Montgomery’s, to be going along sweetly and then get plunged into some dark scene… like the backyard sacrifice demanded by “Kitty Mouse” of the children’s favorite toys, or the ghost parties that left the boys afraid of their own shadow. You wonder how these were allowed at Plumfield. But I suppose there is no perfect school, though the Bahr’s does seem excellent in so very many ways.

We absolutely adored this book. The stories are wonderful, filled with lessons and morals while being captivating and entertaining.

The narrator is brilliant, she truly did a great job with the different characters' voices. Highly recommend this audiobook.
