"The Governess, Beast, Love, Mad Woman, Missionary"

Over the years, I have listened to several performances of Jane Eyre with Wanda McCaddon, Susan Ericksen, Amanda Root, even a couple more which I cannot recall at the moment. Each narrator brings different life experiences and interpretations to the table. I have learned something from each as light was aimed into some new corner. While I highly recommend all of the above versions, Amanda Root turns in the hands down superior performance. I don't know if she is the actress who did such a superior job of portraying Anne Elliot in Persuasion, a rather satisfying movie, not perfect but workman like and creatively respectful to Austen. In any case, I bought this audio book based on her name. I was not disappointed.

The Brontes, in particular Charlotte, had a knack of storytelling using high, almost ferocious poetry disguised as prose. Poetry can get closer to the core of our emotional being than even the finest prose. Ms. Root has managed to make the poetry her own and allows the listener to drink deeply of the passionate love and pain that is Jane Eyre.

    "I LOVED this"

The reader sounded just like I imagine Jane would have. Truly remarkable audiobook. I had tried to read this a few times, but never got far. Within minutes of listening to Amanda Root, I became wholly lost in Jane's character and surroundings. I could';t put it down.

    "Wonderful listen!"

I spent quite sometime trying to decide which narrator to choose, listening to sample audio, etc... Amanda Root is perfect for it! She has an amazing accent that sweeps you into the story. It has been several years since I read Jane Eyre, I loved it even more this time than I did the first.

    "Amazing!"

Not only is this story compelling, beautiful and an all time favorite of mine; but the narrator is incredibly talented and adds so much to this audio version of the beloved classic. I highly recommend this to all, not only the hardcore lover of classics!

I'm 30 years old, from the east coast of America, and my favorite books are realistic, but stretch the truth and the laws of physics.

    Any additional comments?

This narrator spoke in a somewhat monotonous way, and her voice was high and girlish. I didn't feel like that suited the story. I don't see Jane Eyre as bright eyed and girlish. Yes, she is inquisitive and passionate, but that side of her is restrained and tempered with learned obedience. She's more earnest than the intonations here suggest. She's also womanly for her age. I think Mia Wasikowska played her perfectly in the fantastic movie version from around 2012. Go see that movie, btw, it's amazing. Also, listening to this story makes it feel rushed and tedious. You don't get to dwell on details, and this book varies in its details of mood and atmosphere continually. I got a little fed up and bored and just turned it off.

"An excellent reading of a great book"

I thoroughly enjoyed the book and the narration. Having seen several film versions of the book, I was pleasantly surprised to enjoy the novel and not be bored by what I expected to be a familiar story. It's a timeless classic that is well worth a listen for anyone who enjoys 19th Century literature.

    "wonderful performance by Amanda Root"
If you could sum up Jane Eyre [Naxos Edition] in three words, what would they be?

I don't know what they mean by Naxos Edition.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The main character of the book is Jane Eyre. She is an orphan who is a lot like Harry Potter. She grew up in her aunt's house and the aunt didn't like her; her aunt mistreated her. She doesn't share anything in common with Harry after that though. She is straightforward and hardworking. She is clever and intelligent.

    Which scene was your favorite?

I don't want to "give anything away" if someone else hasn't heard the story.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, it's too long. I did listen to it for hours at a time.

    Any additional comments?

The reader was fantastic. I've read this book in the past and didn't know the proper pronunciation of the foreign words, so it was good to hear them read aloud.

"I have totally enjoyed this edition of Jane Eyre"
Would you listen to Jane Eyre [Naxos Edition] again? Why?

Yes! It was a story that kept me hooked.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jane, she was a kind and thoughtful person, she spoke the truth and did not like drama, she was very intelligent, she knew who she was, and knew what she wanted from life. Her strength I also admired.

Have you listened to any of Amanda Root’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    No I have not.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes I believe both. I did find a few parts emotional and there was a chapter that made me angry.

    "Wonderful download, beautifully narrated"

This is my favourite novel of all time. I put off downloading a version for a long time afraid that hearing it would spoil my delight in it. When I finally gave in I took my time over the choice of narrator. This is a lovely version beautifully read and brings to life a wonderful book. Would thoroughly recommend this version.

"Fantastic novel, however not keen on the narrator"

Having not read this book before, I thought I could give the audiobook a try. I found the story excellent, which wasn't a surprise as this is meant to be a classic. I was a little disappointed by the narrator, I found her voice very strange and difficult to sympathise with, especially when voicing Mr Rochester! It was a little distracting but didn't devalue the content.
