Over the years, I have listened to several performances of Jane Eyre with Wanda McCaddon, Susan Ericksen, Amanda Root, even a couple more which I cannot recall at the moment. Each narrator brings different life experiences and interpretations to the table. I have learned something from each as light was aimed into some new corner. While I highly recommend all of the above versions, Amanda Root turns in the hands down superior performance. I don't know if she is the actress who did such a superior job of portraying Anne Elliot in Persuasion, a rather satisfying movie, not perfect but workman like and creatively respectful to Austen. In any case, I bought this audio book based on her name. I was not disappointed.
The Brontes, in particular Charlotte, had a knack of storytelling using high, almost ferocious poetry disguised as prose. Poetry can get closer to the core of our emotional being than even the finest prose. Ms. Root has managed to make the poetry her own and allows the listener to drink deeply of the passionate love and pain that is Jane Eyre.
The reader sounded just like I imagine Jane would have. Truly remarkable audiobook. I had tried to read this a few times, but never got far. Within minutes of listening to Amanda Root, I became wholly lost in Jane's character and surroundings. I could';t put it down.
I spent quite sometime trying to decide which narrator to choose, listening to sample audio, etc... Amanda Root is perfect for it! She has an amazing accent that sweeps you into the story. It has been several years since I read Jane Eyre, I loved it even more this time than I did the first.
Not only is this story compelling, beautiful and an all time favorite of mine; but the narrator is incredibly talented and adds so much to this audio version of the beloved classic. I highly recommend this to all, not only the hardcore lover of classics!
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and the narration. Having seen several film versions of the book, I was pleasantly surprised to enjoy the novel and not be bored by what I expected to be a familiar story. It's a timeless classic that is well worth a listen for anyone who enjoys 19th Century literature.
This is my favourite book of all time and was not disappointed at all by this adaptation. Well done to Amanda Root, beautifully read!
"Wonderful download, beautifully narrated"
This is my favourite novel of all time. I put off downloading a version for a long time afraid that hearing it would spoil my delight in it. When I finally gave in I took my time over the choice of narrator. This is a lovely version beautifully read and brings to life a wonderful book. Would thoroughly recommend this version.
"Fantastic novel, however not keen on the narrator"
Having not read this book before, I thought I could give the audiobook a try. I found the story excellent, which wasn't a surprise as this is meant to be a classic. I was a little disappointed by the narrator, I found her voice very strange and difficult to sympathise with, especially when voicing Mr Rochester! It was a little distracting but didn't devalue the content.
