But there were stories of a strange tenant, a woman who laughed like a maniac, and who stayed in rooms on the third floor. The moody Rochester, however, rebuffed her attempts to find out about the woman, and ordered her to keep quiet about strange noises she heard at night.
One night in the garden, Edward Rochester embraced Jane and proposed marriage. But the quiet ceremony in the village church was shockingly halted by a stranger who claimed that Rochester was already married - to the raving maniac Jane had heard crying in the house.
Grief-stricken, Jane left Thornfield, feeling that her life was over before it had really begun. But life had many surprises in store for our heroine, and among them there just might be a happily-ever-after.

I've always been an avid reader, but as a mom I have few moments in a day to pick up a book and read. Audible is my lifeline to literature!
This book was excellent. Ms. Bronte did an excellent job of telling several seemingly totally separate stories and then bringing them together at the end. As I went through I had to remind myself that each new place she told us about was still connected to the last place, but not in a bad way. I had been putting off reading it for a long time because I was daunted by the idea of getting into classical literature, but once I started reading it I couldn't put it down. I highly recommend it!
The narrator was also excellent. She did a great job differentiating between different accents and voices in a way that was distinctive but not distracting. I'll definitely be looking for more of her work in the future!
I would recommend this book because it is well written and one of the classics.
Couldn't pick just one.
Everything! She makes each character come to life and gives such meaning to the events in the story.
Never give up.
I was wonderful to revisit this book through the narrator. It felt like an old friend come by to talk.
yes. It is a timeless story and the narration is beautifly done.
I am not sure
not extreme, but I often get hooked into the books I am reading.
Yes I would, as a matter of fact this is the second time I listened to it, it is a great story
When Jane tells her stepmother how dreadful she is and how she wasn't following her fathers wishes.
Yes, it was a book I could really get involved in.
It was easy to see why this book is considered a classic.
Classic done right.
Jane, of course. Just think of a world where everyone lived by her ethics.
The difficulty in listening to books you're already familiar with is that there's a tendency to "zone out" occasionally. Some narrators read in a repetitive manner which makes it very difficult to stay connected to the story. Susan Ericksen's performance had me riveted! Listening to a story with the appropriate accent is sometimes better than just trying to imagine it while reading! I almost never read or listen to anything twice, but will definitely listen to Jane Eyre again. In addition, I will look for Susan Ericksen's name when looking for new books in the future.
I have listened to other performances of Jane Eyre that were dry, flat but this Brillance Edition is Excellent and vibrant.
I would definitely recommend this audiobook to a friend. The voice actress was very good. She was clear and interesting, she was definitely acting and not just reading the words which helped the book come alive.
I've read this book many times. It was nice to listen to it for a change.
I was very surprised to hear quite a few stumbles and slip ups by the narrator. They were very obvious, not subtle. I'm sure this is very common (it's a long book written in an old style) but it was VERY disappointing to me that time wasn't taken to edit them out. Surely this is what usually happens, right?
Yes. It was very interesting and the performance of it made it much more enjoyable than I would have found it otherwise.
I enjoyed the old style English.
I liked enjoyed the descriptions of the places she lived the very best.
There is a film - but "A Romance Novel set Long Ago
