But there were stories of a strange tenant, a woman who laughed like a maniac, and who stayed in rooms on the third floor. The moody Rochester, however, rebuffed her attempts to find out about the woman, and ordered her to keep quiet about strange noises she heard at night.
One night in the garden, Edward Rochester embraced Jane and proposed marriage. But the quiet ceremony in the village church was shockingly halted by a stranger who claimed that Rochester was already married - to the raving maniac Jane had heard crying in the house.
Grief-stricken, Jane left Thornfield, feeling that her life was over before it had really begun. But life had many surprises in store for our heroine, and among them there just might be a happily-ever-after.

Jane Eyre was my 8th or 9th purchase from Audible and has been one of my favorites so far. I really enjoy historical romances and romances in general. It was refreshing to find a story written in such an eloquent style, using such descriptive phrases. I understand why this is a great book in curriculum studies because there are so many words I have never heard, however that did not distract from the story, the descriptions were still clear enough and painted a great picture of the story. We need more books like this! It was refreshing to read a romance that does not contain any graphic sexual content, nor did it need it, it was great!
There were so many memorable moments, in general I really loved the interaction between Jane & Edward.
Great narration. She was pleasant and easy to listen to with great emotion, inflection and character distinction.

Classic love story
Jane Eyre of course
when they hear each others voices in the wind
I re-read Jane Eyre every few years. Great to hear it read so well, especially in an unabridged version
I appreciated this book much more this time around than when I read it many years ago as required reading. I became very involved in the main characters life, felt her range of emotions for all that befell her in her life. Excellent story.
I think reading an old book under the trees is terribly romantic, but mostly I just have time to listen to them while I do dishes.
I have never been able to decide on a favorite book, but sometimes I think it is Jane Eyre. I could praise the book, but I am going to assume that most people reading these reviews is more interested in the narrator.
I have listened to Jane Eyre once before, and I thought the voice for Jane was all wrong. I gave Susan Erickson 5 stars because I felt she did justice to all my beloved characters. The only thing that occasionally bothered me was her fast pace during some of the dialogue. I still plan on listening to this version again and think it deserves 5 stars, but sometimes I would find myself thinking "slow down a little!" I listened to all the samples for the unabridged version, and I glad I chose this one.
I enjoyed this story as it had many twists and turns that were unexpected.
My favorite character was Jane Eyre because she has such a pleasant personality and strong character.
I listened to this story before I went to bed at night and it was very hard to choose a stopping point each evening.
The story was very interesting. It was an enjoyable read. I really liked the specific reader of this edition as she could read the French well and read with enthusiasm. My only complaint against this audio book was that the audio had several places where I was given the message " you have reached the end of professional narration of this book" so I would read ahead on my own and find that the story picked up again with the audio. I was listening to this book in conjunction with reading the e-book on my Kindle Fire HD.
Great intonation, narration
Jane Eyre is a great romance that I have read several times as a young girl and now again to refresh my memory but hearing it narrated in the English accent was wonderful.
Several scenes were wonderfully narrated. The attention to detail and descriptions of country side and especially the orchard was beautiful.
I found this audiobook very relaxing to listen to. The voice was excellent and the role playing done well.
Susan Ericksen's voice made the experience of listening to this copy of Jane Eyre so enjoyable! The story if of course a great story too, but her added voice gifting definitely doubled the enjoyment. She does an awesome job playing different voices of various characters, and reading emotions with passion. It's almost like I was watching a movie of it! Even my husband in listening in at some point said, "Man, she's good."
The story is a good story of love, intrigue and integrity. A great classic for sure. The only thing I wasn't too crazy about were the landscape and nature descriptions, but it was part of expressing the character of Jane so it was just a part of who she was. But Susan's voice made even listening to those parts enjoyable. I would love to listen to more of Susan's readings just to enjoy her gift of narrating!
Only if they have very good listening equipment. I ordered audio because I have a hearing loss. I thought using the earphones would work well when exercising. Perhaps it was my earphones not being "top of the line", but I could hardly hear the voice, then it completely left! I read the book which I did enjoy and would highly recommend it. The movie is also being shown on TV and having read the book recently made the movie even better!
I will probably try another audible book if it is read by a man. I tend to hear male voices better than high-pitched female voices.
VERY GOOD! NEXT TO EXCELLENT! The words flowed nicely,GOOD voice choice. The only trouble came that I remember was when the name of St.John came about. I was surprised to see that it could go from English to French to German without a problem. I wish that the voice recognition program that I had on my PC for typing a while back was half as good.
JANE was my favorite and closest to myself on many levels. I served many people in the 20 plus years as an aide.
She has a great accent to read not only for busy adult, but for children also. A clear speaking voice as well as a GOOD pitch for those that are hard of hearing. It was obviously a good choice to have a woman' s voice READING a book from a woman's perspective. VERY WELL DONE!
Yes, excellent quality, great story.
I love listening to her accent and speech
When I was in my youth, the portion about Jane's friend moved me the most.
