But there were stories of a strange tenant, a woman who laughed like a maniac, and who stayed in rooms on the third floor. The moody Rochester, however, rebuffed her attempts to find out about the woman, and ordered her to keep quiet about strange noises she heard at night.
One night in the garden, Edward Rochester embraced Jane and proposed marriage. But the quiet ceremony in the village church was shockingly halted by a stranger who claimed that Rochester was already married - to the raving maniac Jane had heard crying in the house.
Grief-stricken, Jane left Thornfield, feeling that her life was over before it had really begun. But life had many surprises in store for our heroine, and among them there just might be a happily-ever-after.

This was a good experience with a long classic piece of literature.
Character development of both good and bad in the whole story.
Jane of course!
No way could I listen in one sitting. It took days to get through.
I'm glad I got into it. I found that I wanted to write emails in "old English" when I was done listening. Fun to hear the language as well as the readers French when needed within the body of the story and characters. "They quitted the room".... at least I understood what she meant. Fun to enter a different time and place, but oh such a tale she told!
LOVED this story! I laughed and cried on my lengthy commutes to and from work. Love listening to these audible books through my car speakers! At times, I would forget it was a woman speaking the male parts. Susan did a wonderful job!
yes. i am currently using the audio and kindle book reading immersion experience but plan to go thru it again with audio only.
i have seen numerous movie versions but i find the book the most emotionally moving.
too many to choose but if i have i would say after all Jane Eyre went through i am glad there was a happy (but not fairytale) ending.
Emotionally moving but not crying...
i also liked JANE SLAYER which might also be interesting as a reading emmersion experience.
Pretty much everything. I loved Jane's strength, intelligence, determination and especially the kindness she gave to others.I kept picturing Orson Welles who played Edward-Fairfax-Rochester in the 1943 version of this book. He did a fabulous job in the movie and that only enriched the story in my minds eye.
There we so many, it's very hard to choose. The story was so beautiful and moving, I came to tears many times. I plan to read the actual novel so I can savor it at my leisure.
I thought she did a really good job with all characters, especially Jane.
If you have never read this book, here are just a couple of quotes to pique your interest:
“Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong! - I have as much soul as you, - and full as much heart! And if God had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you!”
“Good-night, my-" He stopped, bit his lip, and abruptly left me.”
Wuthering Heights has been one of my favorite books for many years, and I love it still, but this is now the on top of my list.
Wow! What talent those Bronte sisters!
Intelligent, spiritual, and quiet
Jane is a good person who deserves your attention.
I have not, but I feel she had the perfect voice for Jane.
Jane Eyre was my 8th or 9th purchase from Audible and has been one of my favorites so far. I really enjoy historical romances and romances in general. It was refreshing to find a story written in such an eloquent style, using such descriptive phrases. I understand why this is a great book in curriculum studies because there are so many words I have never heard, however that did not distract from the story, the descriptions were still clear enough and painted a great picture of the story. We need more books like this! It was refreshing to read a romance that does not contain any graphic sexual content, nor did it need it, it was great!
There were so many memorable moments, in general I really loved the interaction between Jane & Edward.
Great narration. She was pleasant and easy to listen to with great emotion, inflection and character distinction.
It ranks in the top 25%
Classic love story
Jane Eyre of course
when they hear each others voices in the wind
I re-read Jane Eyre every few years. Great to hear it read so well, especially in an unabridged version
I appreciated this book much more this time around than when I read it many years ago as required reading. I became very involved in the main characters life, felt her range of emotions for all that befell her in her life. Excellent story.
I think reading an old book under the trees is terribly romantic, but mostly I just have time to listen to them while I do dishes.
I have never been able to decide on a favorite book, but sometimes I think it is Jane Eyre. I could praise the book, but I am going to assume that most people reading these reviews is more interested in the narrator.
I have listened to Jane Eyre once before, and I thought the voice for Jane was all wrong. I gave Susan Erickson 5 stars because I felt she did justice to all my beloved characters. The only thing that occasionally bothered me was her fast pace during some of the dialogue. I still plan on listening to this version again and think it deserves 5 stars, but sometimes I would find myself thinking "slow down a little!" I listened to all the samples for the unabridged version, and I glad I chose this one.
I enjoyed this story as it had many twists and turns that were unexpected.
My favorite character was Jane Eyre because she has such a pleasant personality and strong character.
I listened to this story before I went to bed at night and it was very hard to choose a stopping point each evening.
The story was very interesting. It was an enjoyable read. I really liked the specific reader of this edition as she could read the French well and read with enthusiasm. My only complaint against this audio book was that the audio had several places where I was given the message " you have reached the end of professional narration of this book" so I would read ahead on my own and find that the story picked up again with the audio. I was listening to this book in conjunction with reading the e-book on my Kindle Fire HD.
