Publisher's summary

Jane Eyre follows the emotions and experiences of eponymous Jane Eyre, her growth to adulthood, and her love for Mr. Rochester, the byronic master of Thornfield Hall. The novel contains elements of social criticism, with a strong sense of morality at its core, but is nonetheless a novel many consider ahead of its time given the individualistic character of Jane and the novel's exploration of sexuality, religion, and proto-feminism.

A favorite

I loved this book but did not love the narrator. She sounded harsh and loudness fluctuations left me adjusting my volume often.

I want to be like Jane...

Who wouldn't want to be like Jane Eyre? She's a strong, intelligent, and beautiful to the core kinda woman who blooms in the face of troubles most others would wither against. One of my favorites to be sure!

First Audible Book Was a Delight!

I have always dreamed of reading the classics, but so many of them seem daunting. I have never been able to focus on "books on tape," as I am a visual learner. The first book I downloaded from Audible was a book written by my favorite historical Biblical scholar, Marcus Borg. Like every other of his books, I needed to take notes and highlight, so I also ordered the book. "Jane Eyre" is the first Audible book I listened to in its entirety. I do have the book and would, on occasion, follow along which, as it turns out, was a good idea. English accents and French words were, at times, difficult to understand.

The voice actress, Emma Messenger, is amazing. She is able to change her voice for different characters. I "Googled" her and, I think, she is American, but her English accent seems very authentic. She also articulated the French language like a native. I will look for her as a narrator when I order other books.

Having such a positive experience with this classic, I have downloaded others and hope to get my husband interested when we travel. I can't wait to work my way through most of the classics!

Jane and Mr. Rochester, favorite lovers

Would you consider the audio edition of Jane Eyre to be better than the print version?

Both are delicious and very worthy

What other book might you compare Jane Eyre to and why?

Pride and Prejudice...Mr. Darcy is the same kind of Byronic romantic hero, unattainable yet attained by the most unlikely of heroines.

What about Emma Messenger’s performance did you like?

Her voice is remarkable, so varied and expressive.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Find your way home to Mr. Rochester and his unearthly Jane
