Transportive. Romantic. Heartwrenching.
Juliette Stevenson was perfect. This was such an enjoyable, immersive experience. I don't normally rave over a book reading, but I shall never forget how deeply I got into this. Of course, the saga story is superb, but Juliet made it so realistic that I felt I was there with Jane.
Of course, Jane.
I think when she ran away and her difficult journey on the road.
Give that woman a Grammy!
narration by Juliet Stevenson!
I am revisiting 12th grade English as an adult, didn't anticipate the richness added by the enfleshment of characters provided by Ms. Stevenson's presentation.
Jane Eyre captured my attention from page 1, truly a classic. With every chapter i couldn't wait to read the next. I am so glad I chose the Juliet Stevenson version, she played the characters with such passion, creatively, she brought the book alive. 10 Star
I must've read Jane Eyre at least 15 times between the ages of 7 and 67, but never heard it as an audiobook -- never dared. Never having been satisfied with any dramatisation, I always thought that I would do best to keep the voices to myself as well. But Juliet Stevenson does such a good job as reader that for the very first time I actually cried at a point or two, though I could never understand why on earth some of the book's first readers (e.g. Thackeray) said they had. So I'm grateful to have experienced this much loved book freshly, as it were -- not portrayed by actors who don't fit the part, and pruned and altered for the screen, but read in full by one of my favourite Audible narrators, Ms. Stevenson. Brava!
This whole book was brilliantly read and of course, the literature itself is brilliant: warm and illustrative and beautifully written.
My ONLY issue with this audible book is that the reader has a very sibilant S sound which is somewhat distracting. This is more noticeable in the beginning, for whatever reason. Regardless, I heartily recommend Jane Eyre and this reading of it!
Juliet Stevenson brought this book to life for me. I'd read it was before, but it was new again, thanks to her narration, and Charlotte Bronte's prose.
"Classic for a reason"
Fantastic, such beautiful language. Loved every minute of it.
Got me through a very long journey.
"A Timeless Classic Narrated by An Excellent Reader"
Yes, it has an excellent plot told in the first person.
There is no other book which compares to it.
She was so natural and every character was excellently portrayed.
There is sadness and humour in the book.
This has to be the best romance I've ever read. I particularly like the wedding ceremony and I'll never forget the first time I heard a dramatised production of it on the radio. I was looking forward to two people being joined in matrimony and - well, you'll find out when you listen to the book.
Besides romance, however, there's mystery when Jane's at Thornfield Hall and I like the part when Jane's at Moor House and the struggle she eventually has whilst she's there.
I found the audio copy better than reading it, particularly as the girl Jane is teaching at Thornfield Hall is a French girl and if you're not a French speaking Person, as I'm not, reading the book can slow you down a bit.
Juliet Stevenson's performance cannot be praised highly enough. She brings the genius of this first-person narrative to life, and does full justice to the beautifully-drawn characters who propel and adorn this witty, observant, rationally romantic Bildungsroman. Sheer brilliance.
"Wonderful from start to finish"
Juliet Stevenson's narration added another dimension to this much-loved and well-known story. I loved it!
"A privilege to listen to."
I always read the actual book as I listen to the audiobook. Juliet Stevenson's reading has enriched and brought a new dimension to a novel I have read many times. Now I have reached the end I feel an emptiness that is aching to be filled and thanks to Audible I will rejoin Juliet this evening as we embark on Dombey and Son together. I cannot recommend Jane Eyre highly enough. The combined joy of Charlotte Bronte's script and Juliet Stevenson's performance is truly sublime.
this was my first audio book and I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to it - the speaker has much variety in her voice, which also aids the listener in understanding the story . Her different tones for the characters are lovely and make it even more recommendable.
"Perfection. A sublime reading."
Perfect. My favourite book brought vividly to life by a wonderful reading from Juliet Stevenson. Expressive, sympathetic, wonderful variation in mood and characterisation, especially the accents of some of the minor characters.
I immersed myself in this during three long car journeys, and was unconscious of the miles slipping by. An absolute triumph.
Listening to this book IIT was well read and I found it difficult putting it down
"A pure classic."
amazing, heartbreaking and tearjerking
I loved the main character and how she overcame odds to make a good life for herself.
When she finally met her real family.
When her and mr Rochester finally got married.
A classic book and very moving.
"Brilliant story, brilliantly narrated"
I had to read this for college and expected it to be a boring Victorian story but it was actually very entertaining and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The narration was excellent as well, it sounded like Jane Eyre herself was narrating the story.
