This novel is so well known, I will limit my comments to Juliet Stevenson's reading. Thank you, Juliet Stevenson, for bringing so much understanding and nuance to all the characters. I have read JANE EYRE at least three times before. But thanks to Juliet Stevenson's insightful narration -- using pauses and emphases and intonations at points where I would not have imagined them but which seem exactly right -- listening to this audio book was like reading the books
anew. The character of Jane Eyre emerged for me as a true feminist / humanist hero who refuses to betray her own self and dreams but who also questions herself constantly -- which is how she knows who she is and what matters in life. Juliet Stevenson moves us through these interior inquiries with such great heart and understanding. But she also allows all the other characters to come alive and live before us. Bravo, Ms. Stevenson!
I originally purchased a different reading. however that one was un satisfying. Juliet Stevenson is great. You should also get her reading of Sense and sensibility.
There are do many layers in this story..Bronte has not only created a classic, whose story may now be common, but the replicas will not capture the depth of character development the author has endeavoured and managed to do convey. Juliet Stevenson is the best narrator there ever is. Her performance on this work moved me so deeply. I've not written a review in a decade.. and I'm not moved easily, but this work did so.
Transportive. Romantic. Heartwrenching.
Juliette Stevenson was perfect. This was such an enjoyable, immersive experience. I don't normally rave over a book reading, but I shall never forget how deeply I got into this. Of course, the saga story is superb, but Juliet made it so realistic that I felt I was there with Jane.
Of course, Jane.
I think when she ran away and her difficult journey on the road.
Give that woman a Grammy!
narration by Juliet Stevenson!
I am revisiting 12th grade English as an adult, didn't anticipate the richness added by the enfleshment of characters provided by Ms. Stevenson's presentation.
Jane Eyre captured my attention from page 1, truly a classic. With every chapter i couldn't wait to read the next. I am so glad I chose the Juliet Stevenson version, she played the characters with such passion, creatively, she brought the book alive. 10 Star
I must've read Jane Eyre at least 15 times between the ages of 7 and 67, but never heard it as an audiobook -- never dared. Never having been satisfied with any dramatisation, I always thought that I would do best to keep the voices to myself as well. But Juliet Stevenson does such a good job as reader that for the very first time I actually cried at a point or two, though I could never understand why on earth some of the book's first readers (e.g. Thackeray) said they had. So I'm grateful to have experienced this much loved book freshly, as it were -- not portrayed by actors who don't fit the part, and pruned and altered for the screen, but read in full by one of my favourite Audible narrators, Ms. Stevenson. Brava!
Listening to this book IIT was well read and I found it difficult putting it down
"A pure classic."
amazing, heartbreaking and tearjerking
I loved the main character and how she overcame odds to make a good life for herself.
When she finally met her real family.
When her and mr Rochester finally got married.
A classic book and very moving.
"Brilliant story, brilliantly narrated"
I had to read this for college and expected it to be a boring Victorian story but it was actually very entertaining and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The narration was excellent as well, it sounded like Jane Eyre herself was narrating the story.
Juliet Stevenson is a fantastic narrator. I could listen to her read the phone book. I have always loved Jane Eyre and Stevenson's reading enhanced my enjoyment of this classic novel.
I have loved this novel from the first time i read it at the age on 17. 11 years on it is still as moving as the first time. I love this novel and will continue to listen and read it for many years to come. It look me a while to get used to the narration but once you settle into it, it is perfect.
"A classic I actually enjoyed"
I liked the book a great deal. The narration was excellent and the plot moved fairly quickly. This was my first foray into audiobooks - I really liked listening to a book and so will keep it up.
I loved this book 22 years ago when we read it for A Level and I love it now.
"What a romp!"
A compelling narrative recounted with intelligence wit and vigour.
The characters leap from the page (!) and Miss Stephenson's voice. I know that they will continue to populate my imagination for ever.
Jane, JANE?! Mr Rochester, my Master. Pilot. The driest biscuit Rev Rivers. Brenda Mason and her strange nurse Grace Poole. Sweet Adele. Helen Burns - still brings tears to my eyes. And Thornfield with its grandeur, it's secrets and its calamitous destiny.
What a book.
What a compelling performance.
What a joy awaits you kind listener..!
I envy you the journey.
"Super classic read beautifully"
I would recommend this audio book. I did know the story and had read the book but listening at my leisure-usually walking the dog, has been fantastic and thoroughly enjoyable.
Narration and classic story
Too many to mention
"Always one of my favourite books!"
