"This powerful novel leaves me haunted by the isolation in which each character, not just Ira, stands in history." (The New York Times Book Review)
"As social history it bbreathes life. In Ira Ringold, Roth has created one of his singularly ripe, vigorous characters. Ira's dizzying rise and fall out of and back into the working class trace the trajectory of twenty years of American history." (Chicago Tribune)
"Philip Roth is an amazing writer.... I Married a Communist may very well become his classic work; perhaps a classic for all time." (The Plain Dealer)
Good story but the sound quality was quite poor. I could not make out much of the dialogue and had to wear sound cancelling headphones with volume way up to get most of it. Don't purchase anything with alow sound rating it will drive you crazy rewinding.
Well, I grew up among Trotskyists and the rhetoric and weakness and internal squabbling and ideological name-calling is so accurate and sad and funny, I was roaring with laughter throughout. Also, in case you haven't noticed, Phillip Roth is one of the greatest writers of our time because his language and observations are so sublime and clear and shocking.
"From this, he took a lesson: value the original, fragile, and rough. That's the art." Holland Carter on the art of Henri Mattisse
The audio version of this one is awful, no matter how I tried to listen. The late, wonderful actor Ron Silver sounds as if he's standing in a large empty aquarium and I'm on the other side of the glass.
I truly wanted to enjoy this audiobook. I've listened to another audiobook narrated by Ron Silver and loved it. "I Married a Communist" is, of course, the middle leg of the great American trilogy written by Philip Roth, with "American Pastoral" and "The Human Stain," both of which I read, listened to and loved.
I'm hopeful someone can remaster this recording or re-record it with another esteemed actor.
This one I think is good but I'd like to really hear it. The sound is quality is poor. I am a quarter way through it, and may not finish. Don't waste your money. It's a shame they apparently can't improve the sound.
I listened to the all three books in this trilogy in from Audible. This one is easiest the worst simply because the audio is so terrible. Beware-- this one you may want to read instead. It is not Silver's fault (although his characters are quite similar in sound to those in American Pastoral). This is like listening to a cassette tape you made 25 years ago.
I can't imagine Phillip Roth would approve.
Even so, I didn't empathize with the characters the way I did in Human Stain or American Pastoral. It lacked the memorable, raw scenes where vulnerability, rage, eroticism and fear all come to a head. Don't stray too far from wanting this book-- Roth when he is not at his best is still better than almost everyone else.
But an interesting and complex read, nonetheless. Roth is one of my favorite writers and he deals with his subject matter in a thoughtful and explanatory manner. It helps that Ron Silver's voice captures the accents and inflections well. The characters are full of contradictions, which gives them a human dimension. I did enjoy this; I just wasn't as floored by it as the previous Roth book I read.
I bought this to complete the Roth American Life trilogy (American Pastoral, The Human Stain). I loved the others, and like this book. I enjoyed Ron Silver's performance. The audio quality is truly awful, the worst I have heard from Audible, but I still thought it was worth the listen especially if you have read the other two books (though they are not thematically linked and each stands alone). Better audio quality would add the 4th star.
I'm sorry but after 12 or 13 Roth books I've given up. I find him to be repetitive and boring and vastly overrated. I liked the Goodbye Columbus selections, but 1 good one out of the many i've tried is not a good percentage. No intention of trying any more Roth.
