Publisher's summary

"I find Hornblower admirable, vastly entertaining" - Winston Churchill

In the wake of a humbling incident aboard a canal boat in the Cotswolds, young Captain Horatio Hornblower arrives in London to take command of the Atropos, a 22-gun sloop barely large enough to require a captain. Her first assignment under Hornblower's command is as flagship for the funeral procession of Lord Nelson.

Soon Atropos is part of the Mediterranean Fleet's harassment of Napoleon, recovering treasure that lies deep in Turkish waters and boldly challenging a Spanish frigate several times her size. At the center of each adventure is Hornblower, Forester's most inspired creation, whose blend of cautious preparation and spirited execution dazzles friend and foe alike.

Critic reviews

"A rousing tale of history, character, and adventure...For once Hornblower is the mouse Instead of the cat, but he makes that role fully as dramatic as the other." ( Chicago Tribune)

Love all the Hornblower books

I'm a busy guy like most of us, but during the day and evening I take my dog on long walks and I have enjoyed my dog walks even more, and walked further, thanks to CS Forester's exciting books. I even think my dog likes them because he gets to walk and run even more.

Excellent Story

Having been disappointed by the reader in a previous book, I have grown accustomed to and even enjoy Mr Coaster’s not unsubstantial abilities. The story is excellent as usual and I am happy with the yarn as told. Many thanks.

different narrator

doesnt live up to the person who read the previous books in date continuity. try it on 1.25 or even 1.5 speed to make him sound like hes not reading you a bedtime story.

Check pronunciation

Narrator was good, but mispronounced much of the naval terminology. Otherwise was a good and fun listen.

Another victory.

It's Horatio Hornblower. Need I say more? This voice is not as good to the ear as the other reader, but not bad.

Very Good

Unlike others, I think the narrator is excellent. He is the voice of Hornblower. The story starts slow but builds to an interesting action in the Mediterranea.

Stellar plot on the high seas!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, very much because the plot/storyline is good. It keeps the reader engaged and does not drop at any time. It is amazing that C.S.Forrester could visualize such a plot with many twists.

What other book might you compare Hornblower and the "Atropos" to and why?

Hornblower and the Hotspur.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Nicolas Coster?

Maybe. Narration by Nicolas Coster was somewhat slow in some places. I would not say that his narration is bad, just a tad slow. I would still listen to another book narrated by Nicolas, hopefully not a boring book.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Watch the adventure in the 18th century British navy.

Great sea tale

The plot is reasonably paced and the reader does a great job of not just reading the book, but of telling the story. If you like Patrick Tull as a reader, you will like this.
