Publisher's summary

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Literature, Margaret Mitchell's great novel of the South is one of the most popular books ever written. Within six months of its publication in 1936, Gone With the Wind had sold a million copies. To date, it has been translated into 25 languages, and more than 28 million copies have been sold.

Here are the characters that have become symbols of passion and desire: darkly handsome Rhett Butler and flirtatious Scarlett O'Hara. Behind them stand their gentler counterparts: Ashley Wilkes and Melanie Hamilton. As the lives and affairs of these absorbing characters play out against the tumult of the Civil War, Gone With the Wind reaches dramatic heights that have swept generations of fans off their feet.

Having lived in Atlanta for many years, narrator Linda Stephens has an authentic ear for the dialects of that region. Get ready to hear Gone With the Wind exactly as it was written: every word beautifully captured in a spectacular unabridged audio production.

Critic reviews

"The best novel to have ever come out of the South...it is unsurpassed in the whole of American writing." ( The Washington Post)

Often based on real people, events, and scenarios, historical fiction gives us the opportunity to learn about worlds and times we will never experience while introducing fascinating characters and stories set in their midst. Sometimes, the genre can even give us a peek into hidden storylines that routinely go unmentioned in traditional history books, showing us that those of ages past are perhaps not so different from ourselves.

Much better than the movie.

The reader was very good with the characters. She showed their personality. it is a long book but well worth the time taken listening to it. Unfortunately, I spent a lot of nights listening to the book instead of sleeping.

Great book, well played.

Very well done. My only complaint was that sometimes the audio had skips in it. They were more frequent at the end.

Great great great!

At the beginning I was not sure I would like to listen to the audiobook, but that changed in a hurry. I did remember very little about the movie, but, I was young at the time and did not grasp the story.
I will listen to it again. I suffer from MS and sometimes what I am trying to say in writing does not come out right lol.
All I can say for sure, is that it is a great listen, worth buying.

It took me a while to read the book that my wife has loved for so long but I'm glad I finally did read it.

Phenomenal!!!

If you liked the movie, you will LOVE the book!!! The movie actually followed the book quite well... I was impressed by the overall similarity between the two. The book just provided more details and made the story all the more colorful.

Classic

The old South perspective and racial language don't age well, but fold into the contours of this story and its time. The characters are vibrantly presented. The scope and panorama are striking. Scarlet is still a brilliantly drawn figure in the midst of this story. The narrator does a smooth delivery and the moments of singing are lovely.

Great book and Great Performance!

Finally, "reading" Margaret Mitchell's masterpiece. Loved the movie, but once again the movie doesn't compare to the awesomeness that is the book. The performance was well done and I was very happy with my purchase.
