Publisher's summary

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Literature, Margaret Mitchell's great novel of the South is one of the most popular books ever written. Within six months of its publication in 1936, Gone With the Wind had sold a million copies. To date, it has been translated into 25 languages, and more than 28 million copies have been sold.

Here are the characters that have become symbols of passion and desire: darkly handsome Rhett Butler and flirtatious Scarlett O'Hara. Behind them stand their gentler counterparts: Ashley Wilkes and Melanie Hamilton. As the lives and affairs of these absorbing characters play out against the tumult of the Civil War, Gone With the Wind reaches dramatic heights that have swept generations of fans off their feet.

Having lived in Atlanta for many years, narrator Linda Stephens has an authentic ear for the dialects of that region. Get ready to hear Gone With the Wind exactly as it was written: every word beautifully captured in a spectacular unabridged audio production.

Critic reviews

"Beyond a doubt one of the most remarkable first novels produced by an American writer. It is also one of the best." ( The New York Times)
"The best novel to have ever come out of the South...it is unsurpassed in the whole of American writing." ( The Washington Post)

Featured Article: The Best Historical Fiction Audiobooks

Often based on real people, events, and scenarios, historical fiction gives us the opportunity to learn about worlds and times we will never experience while introducing fascinating characters and stories set in their midst. Sometimes, the genre can even give us a peek into hidden storylines that routinely go unmentioned in traditional history books, showing us that those of ages past are perhaps not so different from ourselves.

Saw the movie first, but the novel is better.

Would you listen to Gone with the Wind again? Why?

Yes, there is a lot of material.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Gone with the Wind?

When Rhett covered for Ashley to the Union officer. Or maybe when Scarlett was in the abandoned Atlanta and stayed with Melanie at her peril. Not something you would expect from Scarlett.

What about Linda Stephens’s performance did you like?

Very good!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Say it ain't so, joe!

Any additional comments?

I saw the movie first and wondered if I could hang with the book. The book is always better!

On my 5th listen!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Scarlett. Here is the reason I have listened so many times: I am trying to figure out, for the life of me, HOW Scarlett is a sympathetic character! She's conceded, arrogant, self-centered, a HORRIBLE mother, incapable of being a friend, treats people as disposable objects to be used as a means to an end, et cetera! Yet, I root for her the entire time! Why?? I love her and think she is great and amazing, and I don't know why.

Any additional comments?

This book is a work of art. It enhances the movie and vice versa. The description of each and every character in the book is SPOT ON in the movie. I don't know how they did it! They omitted the most appropriate aspects of the book for the movie, for instance Scarlett's first child. Every book-based movie has to take a lot out, but I thought they did a wonderful job of telling the story with all the important details in tact, such as the depth of the characters.
Vivien Leigh is a literal embodiment of Scarlett (aside from the first lines in the book which describe Scarlett as not particularly pretty despite her attractiveness).

Wonderful – Fantastic

What can I say about Gone with the Wind? I found myself sitting in my car for an extra 10 minutes just to listen to a little bit more. Scarlett is my hero!!

A classic

Would you consider the audio edition of Gone with the Wind to be better than the print version?

Great example of a history of the civil was. A classic. History students would learn a lot. Scarlett had a go and guts attitude.

What other book might you compare Gone with the Wind to and why?

None

What about Linda Stephens’s performance did you like?

Just great reader. Great voices.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

One full drama

Worth every last minute

It ended so much like I would have guessed, and the journey getting to that point was so rewarding. The narrarator was amazing! My heart wasn't sad at the end but just more vindicated than anything else. I went between so many moments of loving and hating Scarlet...same with Rhett. Great Book! I will listen again!

Great Story

This was my first audible book and it was a great experience. Made me wish I had a longer commute so that I can enjoy listening longer.

One of the BEST ever written

Margaret Mitchell has written one of the greatest character books I've ever read. How could I come to care about, and even admire, such a selfish creature as Scarlett O'Hara? How could I manage to be charmed by that pragmatic rogue, Rhett Butler?

This book will immerse you into the culture of the time. The authors ability to create a sense of place, to develop complex characters without giving too much away, to build suspense, to capture mood and feeling...it's almost unparallelled.

Linda Stephens, the narrator, is extraordinary. Her voice is pleasant, her intonations perfect, her characters distinct, her pitch and the rhythm and accents are spot on. I could listen to this woman talk all day. Even my husband was caught up in listening and he could care less about his book.

BUY THIS BOOK. It is extraordinary in every way, and honestly one of the best written books I've ever read.

Great read

Had never read only watched the movie. Several parts were different so very good, but the singing is horrible!!! Be sure to turn way down or get earphones out when it starts.

Life changing

It was hard to get through but not because it wasn't good but because it was heart wrenching. I loved it and it was an amazing performance.
