Publisher's summary

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Literature, Margaret Mitchell's great novel of the South is one of the most popular books ever written. Within six months of its publication in 1936, Gone With the Wind had sold a million copies. To date, it has been translated into 25 languages, and more than 28 million copies have been sold.

Here are the characters that have become symbols of passion and desire: darkly handsome Rhett Butler and flirtatious Scarlett O'Hara. Behind them stand their gentler counterparts: Ashley Wilkes and Melanie Hamilton. As the lives and affairs of these absorbing characters play out against the tumult of the Civil War, Gone With the Wind reaches dramatic heights that have swept generations of fans off their feet.

Having lived in Atlanta for many years, narrator Linda Stephens has an authentic ear for the dialects of that region. Get ready to hear Gone With the Wind exactly as it was written: every word beautifully captured in a spectacular unabridged audio production.

"The best novel to have ever come out of the South...it is unsurpassed in the whole of American writing." ( The Washington Post)

Often based on real people, events, and scenarios, historical fiction gives us the opportunity to learn about worlds and times we will never experience while introducing fascinating characters and stories set in their midst. Sometimes, the genre can even give us a peek into hidden storylines that routinely go unmentioned in traditional history books, showing us that those of ages past are perhaps not so different from ourselves.

Movie was better but the book was great

The movie was certainly better in my opinion, but the source material was great in its own right. The performance was top knotch and I can see how the film was an inspiration for the reader's performance.

love story

this is not a history book but a love story, people story, set in the civil war. most of the statements on actual people are not based in facts.

Narration is flawless

The story is reflective of the time and mindset, which is hard to hear. Scarlett is endlessly selfish and reaps what she sews. The ending is hard to accept, so I recommend quickly following with Ripley’s “sequel,” Scarlett.
I would listen to almost anything narrated by Linda Stephens. She’s fantastic!

Narrator is fantastic

Very good. Interesting perspective that differs vastly from everything I was taught in school. I thought the narrator did a good job.

Surprisingly captivating

Used a credit on this book after watching the movie and it didn’t disappoint. There are a lot of outdated opinions that come up but in between that is an incredibly engaging and well written story. Great characters and narration def five stars

Truly Captivating

A must listen for any Gone With the Wind movie fan! So much more to the story that has fascinated me for all these years. I couldn’t imagine changing a thing! Now I understand why Margaret Mitchell declined the many requests for writing a sequel. The story ends because Rhett’s love for Scarlet ends. Fans want more,(myself included) but Rhett wants no more of Scarlet. His “give a damn” has expired. That, not only, wouldn’t leave much of a story for making the sequel but it would also take away from this infuriating, almost disturbing, yet powerful ending. Plus it would never measure up to this masterpiece I treasure! So glad that I FINALLY got around to reading and listening to this captivating book!

Grabbed my attention from start to finish

This book is incredible and 1,000x better than the movie! The recording is long, but it didn't feel like it because you become a part of the book and get attached to all the characters. It's one of those books that keeps you thinking about it even when the story ends. I 100 percent recommend listening to this audio.
