Publisher's summary

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Literature, Margaret Mitchell's great novel of the South is one of the most popular books ever written. Within six months of its publication in 1936, Gone With the Wind had sold a million copies. To date, it has been translated into 25 languages, and more than 28 million copies have been sold.

Here are the characters that have become symbols of passion and desire: darkly handsome Rhett Butler and flirtatious Scarlett O'Hara. Behind them stand their gentler counterparts: Ashley Wilkes and Melanie Hamilton. As the lives and affairs of these absorbing characters play out against the tumult of the Civil War, Gone With the Wind reaches dramatic heights that have swept generations of fans off their feet.

Having lived in Atlanta for many years, narrator Linda Stephens has an authentic ear for the dialects of that region. Get ready to hear Gone With the Wind exactly as it was written: every word beautifully captured in a spectacular unabridged audio production.

Critic reviews

"The best novel to have ever come out of the South...it is unsurpassed in the whole of American writing." ( The Washington Post)

Featured Article: The Best Historical Fiction Audiobooks

Often based on real people, events, and scenarios, historical fiction gives us the opportunity to learn about worlds and times we will never experience while introducing fascinating characters and stories set in their midst. Sometimes, the genre can even give us a peek into hidden storylines that routinely go unmentioned in traditional history books, showing us that those of ages past are perhaps not so different from ourselves.

Amazing story

I could see why this story gain made a whole southern revival in US when it came out. I am a 28 your old guy from Texas who once lived in Georgia. After reading this book it made me want to go back and visit Georgia. Its a story of war, love, business and the strength of a passionate women. There is not many books written these days that can match the perfection of the writing style. The narrator of this book made the voices nice and realistic. It helped capture the magic of the book. I was able to forget easily that one person was narrating the whole book. I wish there were more books of this caliber.

A classic

I have loved this always. Some parts do sound ugly and awful in 2020 but if you can listen and keep the context it won't take away from the beauty of what is ultimately a star crossed lovers story.

Great story, great audio

Amazing story, and one of the best audio performances ever. The narrator made the story come alive--and what a story it is! Yes, there are some really cringe-inducingly racist passages--but probably no more than would be expected from a Southern white woman writing in the 1930s. But this is not a story primarily about race relations--but rather about the foolish pride of self-willed people who destroy the people and things they love the most, about the truly selfless love of a holy fool, and about the passing of a whole way of life. Matchless characterization of people and a whole civilization--at any rate a whole civilization as seen from the viewpoint of those at the top. Everyone should read this book.

Required reading by my better half

As usual the book is far superior to the movie. I love the depth of Scarlet and the humanity that she’s real with real emotion and internal struggle

wow! What a train wreck!

And amazingly written book. It also gives perspective into racism, and the beginnings of the KKK. I really never understood how it was rationalised before, but the book explains the dysfunctional thinking that was occurring. I can understand why it is such an upsetting book.
