Publisher's summary

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Literature, Margaret Mitchell's great novel of the South is one of the most popular books ever written. Within six months of its publication in 1936, Gone With the Wind had sold a million copies. To date, it has been translated into 25 languages, and more than 28 million copies have been sold.

Here are the characters that have become symbols of passion and desire: darkly handsome Rhett Butler and flirtatious Scarlett O'Hara. Behind them stand their gentler counterparts: Ashley Wilkes and Melanie Hamilton. As the lives and affairs of these absorbing characters play out against the tumult of the Civil War, Gone With the Wind reaches dramatic heights that have swept generations of fans off their feet.

Having lived in Atlanta for many years, narrator Linda Stephens has an authentic ear for the dialects of that region. Get ready to hear Gone With the Wind exactly as it was written: every word beautifully captured in a spectacular unabridged audio production.

Critic reviews

"The best novel to have ever come out of the South...it is unsurpassed in the whole of American writing." ( The Washington Post)

Featured Article: The Best Historical Fiction Audiobooks

Often based on real people, events, and scenarios, historical fiction gives us the opportunity to learn about worlds and times we will never experience while introducing fascinating characters and stories set in their midst. Sometimes, the genre can even give us a peek into hidden storylines that routinely go unmentioned in traditional history books, showing us that those of ages past are perhaps not so different from ourselves.

An Absolute Masterpiece

The characters are developed so vividly in this masterpiece. An incredible story of American history presented through inspiring prose.

Of all the books I have read or listened to, this is the one I most enjoyed.

portrays the human experience

I was drawn into the story as if I was Scarlett. I felt her pain, her determination to never be in want again. I also observed how she was blinded by things (don't want to spoil it). Rhett and Melanie were great characters as well. Overall, this story demonstrated some of the main themes that define humans: loneliness, love, pride, anger, sacrifice, and honor. I was brought into it and my heart was touched.

This book deserves every star that it receives

At the age of 53 I have never watched this movie although I’ve heard that it was one of the best films to watch. After reading the book I am so grateful I did not watch the movie, but that is next on my list. If you’re debating whether to pick this one up, I urge you to do so. This book is amazing and takes you three times that are long past, rich with history, rich with love and loss.

so very different from the movie! so much more.

I loved it. I read a review where somebody said it wasn't much different from the movie. There is so much more to Scarlett O'Hara story. she wasn't that little prissy b**** that everybody made her out to be. Ashley was actually a bed of a weasel, and Rhett Butler turned out to be the real man. poor Scarlett. we all understand numbing ourselves so that we can proceed forward. She was a woman far beyond her years. loved it!

Absolutely superb in every sense of the word

I could spin a web of review for this book that would span miles in length, or many pages, but I will keep it brief for any who need a nudge in the right direction. This book will both mend and break your heart, as all art is supposed to do( in my opinion). If you are prone to crying or are in any way flamboyant emotionally, this book will take you on a ride only comparable to that of the most heart-stopping of roller coasters. If you somehow don’t have a heart to break or mend, this fine piece of literary genius will lend you one, only so it can tear it to shreds and stitch it back together again. Then incinerate it in carnivorous pleasure.

So, read it. Jump in the seat at your own peril and enjoy the ride. You will not regret it, nor will you forget it.
