Publisher's summary

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Literature, Margaret Mitchell's great novel of the South is one of the most popular books ever written. Within six months of its publication in 1936, Gone With the Wind had sold a million copies. To date, it has been translated into 25 languages, and more than 28 million copies have been sold.

Here are the characters that have become symbols of passion and desire: darkly handsome Rhett Butler and flirtatious Scarlett O'Hara. Behind them stand their gentler counterparts: Ashley Wilkes and Melanie Hamilton. As the lives and affairs of these absorbing characters play out against the tumult of the Civil War, Gone With the Wind reaches dramatic heights that have swept generations of fans off their feet.

Having lived in Atlanta for many years, narrator Linda Stephens has an authentic ear for the dialects of that region. Get ready to hear Gone With the Wind exactly as it was written: every word beautifully captured in a spectacular unabridged audio production.

Often based on real people, events, and scenarios, historical fiction gives us the opportunity to learn about worlds and times we will never experience while introducing fascinating characters and stories set in their midst. Sometimes, the genre can even give us a peek into hidden storylines that routinely go unmentioned in traditional history books, showing us that those of ages past are perhaps not so different from ourselves.

Great book, great narration

The content of the book really needs no review from me since people have loved it for years, but I will say a few words about it. It would be easy to pick this apart because of our politically correct atmosphere in this country. Many of the attitudes expressed are a little hard to take in light of the way we think about race relations today. However, if you can accept those things as an attempt by the author to express the attitudes of the people of whom she wrote, there is a great deal of wisdom in the book. There is also a great deal of history woven into the story-line. This book was, in fact, one of the books that led me to declare history as my major many years ago.
As for the performance, I can hardly say enough. I don't know enough to say just how accurate the narrator is with her renditions of various dialects, but she certainly makes them believable. Several different southern accents as well as an Irish brogue are represented in the book, and she handles them all admirably.

Easy listening

Linda Stephens does such a good job reading. It was easy to listen to and follow the story line. Her voice flowed easily from dialogue to descriptive text making it a delightful experience. If you haven't listened to Gone With The Wind you have missed an enthralling story telling experience.

I wondered what the big deal was, now I know

I found this book truly enthralling, I listened to the whole thing in less than a week. The narration encaging and not to be missed. I do understand the racist overtones of this book. And know that many of the images portrayed are stereo types. Looking beyond those negatives the book is every thing it is hyped to be.

So take an imaginary journey to the south and discover just how selfish scarlet really is.

I loved the ending abs understand that Margaret Mitchell wrote that first.

Wow! Just. Wow!

The book is just incredible. Margaret Mitchell is an incredible author! To me, it is one of the greatest books ever written. As an audiobook, it just blew me away. I can't even describe the emotions I felt while listening to this book. The narration was fantastic. I'm sure most of us know that poor narration will ruin even a great book. But Linda Stephens does such a amazing job! I especially loved her voices for Rhett and Scarlett. I haven't enjoyed another audiobook as much as I enjoyed this one. Truly impressed.
