Publisher's summary

Set in the 1950’s Paris of American expatriates, liaisons, and violence, a young man finds himself caught between desire and conventional morality. With a sharp, probing imagination, James Baldwin’s now-classic narrative delves into the mystery of loving and creates a moving, highly controversial story of death and passion that reveals the unspoken complexities of the human heart.

James Baldwin Never Disappoints

Any additional comments?
If all Authors were as gifted as Mr. Baldwin, few of us would remove our nose from the pages long enough to get much of anything else done.

What An Experience

I’d heard much about this author; this was my first foray into his work. Wow. Stunned. He weaves such an interesting tale involving a few characters and a small corridor in the city. I felt like I was floating above, watching the story unfold. Definitely worthy. Narration is good, too.

Good but Difficult to Finish.

I enjoyed the book overall, but it was very slow. I found it hard to get past the beginning. Started and stopped a couple of times.

Brilliantly written

Baldwin’s outstanding prose invites the reader into this private world that unfolds and reveals its many layers.

Exquisite

Brilliantly subtle and insightful. The prose seems prosaic and yet is spare like Hemingway and feels like the underside of Gatsby at times. Very evocative.

Get a reader who knows how to pronounce French words?

The mispronunciation of so many of the French words really got in the way of my listening experience, even though the written text itself is excellent
